On the U.S/ Canadian border a small plane carrying a cargo of drugs crashes into a lake in the centre of a national park. Soon the dealers show up to claim their shipment and force the forest ranger to help them retreieve the drugs from the bottom of the lake.

Watching Van Damme snap necks, break legs and generally beat people black and blue never gets old and playing the bad guy here makes it even better. Van Damme plays Xander the leader of the drug gang a very unhinged environmentalist who would rather slice your throat than shoot you because guns are bad for the environment. The fight scenes are great and Van Damme is as agile as ever and along with his crazed acting he brings some great humour to the role. This humour is not for the sake of humour it seems to go much deeper and ads to the craziness of Xander which for me was a great move in making him feel more realistic.

The story is pretty generic a drug drop off goes wrong two enemies must team up to stop a greater evil etc etc but it does not take away from the film at all. Good fun and well worth a watch. A bit more of this and a bit less of Welcome To The Jungle and Van Damme will continue on the up and up.

On a serious note my only problem with The Expendables 2 is that Van Damme was very underused.

Unfortunately everyone is a little underused. They should make the films two and a half hours to give the characters a bit of breathing space.

I found the tone of Expendables 2 very uneven in comparison to the first one which seemed to know what it was trying to be.

13 SINS - A remake of "13: Game of Death". A downtrodden wage slave on the verge of losing everything figures he's found a way of saving his relationship and disabled brother from looming destitution - salvation seems to have arrived via his mobile in the from of a game promising big money, if he'll only play along... '13 Sins' is pretty entertaining, a straightforward take on the well worn trope of 'game goes evil and there's a seemingly vast conspiracy behind it all' (see uhm 'The Game'). The protagonist here switches from milquetoast to savage psychopath as the voice on his mobile cajoles him into increasingly violent assaults on public order, but he never loses core sympathy (or at least a sliver of it). I generally like films like this, they tap into real day-to-day fears caused by the nightmare of late capitalism, where economic and social survival is always under threat and aggressive interpersonal competition (we're taught) is the only route to 'being a winner'. Well, '13 Sins' is a winner of sorts, a very good action horror flick which delivers cheap thrills under the guise of pessimistic (but probably opportunistic) social commentary.

For those of us that own 13:Game of Death, does the remake bring anything new to the table?
