This weeks cinema visit was to see Furious 7 the latest instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise. Dumb script, dumb dialogue, dumb acting but some great car stunts and a fun turn from Kurt Russell meant that, even allowing for the overly sentimental ending, it was a mildly entertaining way to pass a wet Saturday afternoon. Not the worst film I will see this year.

I also put in some time with Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the bad and the Ugly and Grandslam on blu and DVD during a Morricone sound track influenced week. The weekend has also seen V/H/S Viral (didn't like), Interstellar (much better second time round) and The Guest (excellent) pass through my blu-ray player.

So far today, a re-viewing of The Bride Wore Black (1968) a somewhat overlooked film by François Truffaut, an incredibly stylish, if slow paced, revenge film. It isn't explosive, over the top, its the little things, the characterisation and thoughtful plot that makes this film amazing. One of my all time favourite films.
Have you read the source novel by Cornell Woolwich, he also wrote "Rear Window". Interesting man I recall: a self loathing gay man with one leg and an alcohol problem.

An absolutely riveting one locale, low budget masterpiece. What starts off as a gritty story of social dysfunction and kitchen sink realism of a dilapidated urban tower block of nightmares soon becomes a tense, exciting, horror / thriller.

The film's pacing is excellent with never a dull moment onscreen, largely due to the edgy direction, taught script and a fine ensemble cast including Sheridan Smith, Russell Tovey and Ralph Brown, who carry it all off with aplomb.

I was genuinely gripped from first to last.

Highly recommended.
I really liked it too.

Gonna have to go back to some of that stuff. Whether it was fuelled by self loathing and his bitter, cramped life or not (I imagine it was), he wrote some really dark, paranoid 'noir'.

I used to have a collection of 3 or 4 of his novels in one book with an excellent biographical essay at the start.

David Goodis and Charles Williams, along with Thompson are my favourite noir writers.

If you haven't read it, Goodis' "The Burglar" is Camus on the skids and highly recommended.

Been years since I read it, but 'Night Has A Thousand Eyes' etc really chimed. I'm trying to get back into reading more, so I think I'll pick up on some of Woolrich's stuff because I haven't really explored it all that much. Hard-boiled but weird, kind of 'modernist' (or had a distorted, irreal edge to it. If I remember).
Skid-row Camus sounds good / Goodis. I've had spurts of trying to be Kafka on diamond white but it didn't really work out.
On a tangent but related, do you like Derek Raymond? Soz if all this wrong thread, mods.

I haven't but I was looking to pick up a copy of it today, preferably an attractive old edition but I think I might just get it for the kindle so I can read it and continue the search in bookshops and car boot sales.

Yeah, really rate Raymond, whatever happened to the TV series based on his books that was talked about years ago. I'm surprised none of his novels aren't films.

Interstellar (2014) WTF! That was great I have to say one of the best pictures I've seen in a long while! But just short of perfect.
