Thanks SShaw for the thoughts on the films you watched at the Berlin Fantasy Film Fest as it has helped me make a few definite decisions of what to watch at Frightfest next week.

Nice transfer, none of hammer's big two but we do have the omnipresent Micheal Ripper in a small role. As much as I like it I still prefer tyburns legend of the werewolf a film that's crying out for a DVD or blu Ray release. 7/10

Shameless:

#9 Night Train Murders (1975) This is more like it! After a month of mostly dull shameless titles, (bar one or two), this one held my attention. Not as good as some others in the genre but a worthy addition.

#10 The Frightened Woman (1969) WTF! I had no idea where this was going! What sold it for me was the trailer with that sexy little dance in the badages! However that ending I didn't see coming! Again it kept my interest.

Along with Footprints, this is probably my favourite title that Shameless have released.

Wasn't too keen on 'Footprints' first time round. Its one of those that everyone raves about but seems to do nothing for me......like Fulci (Go on Demoncrat... Burn The Heretic II(I)

Bonfires all round then

You philistines

Ahem!

Ghosthouse aka La Casa 3 (1988, Humphrey Humbert? Umberto flipping Lenzi more like!!)
CB radio operator hears scary broadcast, hunts down source with rag tag bunch of companions (including two battling sisters). now this is more like it, with his tin ear for dialogue UL churns out another indistinguished "haunted" movie from the 80s, that somehow still manages to keep your attention. Not as outright funny or nasty as La Casa 4 aka Witchery, but that dosn't matter. Technology used to channel a warning from the ether is also kinda (if you squint) the premise of.....

Unfriended (aka Cybernatural, 2014, Leo Gabriadze)
Where the moral seems to be don't live your entire life online. Or at least, have some dignity ahem.
Best watched on your PC (see gag's review) in the dark for full effect . I actually enjoyed this, but can see it spawning a whole shitload of crummy knockoffs.
Unless it's already a remake of a Japanese film , which was the vibe I got in parts. Nae film is flawless, and the ending was a bit The Last Broadcast for my tastes, but best revenge film since Oldboy???

Torso (1973, Sergio Martino)
I love this film. I love the ST. I'd love the blu ray cough. Next!!

VAMPIRE SISTERS - Don Dohler remains close to many a genre fan's heart for his shoestring forays into backyard monster movie territory – witness the likes of 'Night Beast'. Before his untimely demise, he revived his genre career after teaming up with local 'talent' Joe Ripple for a couple of blasts of microbudget horror. This is one of the latter. Dohler produces, Ripple directs. What can I say about 'Vampire Sisters'? Heh heh. Well, it sucks, but on one level it could be awesome. It's basically about three vampires (who happen to be sisters) and their internet porn website. In a logic defying business move, they entice their highest paying customers to their house and drink their blood after plying them with whatever fetishistic fantasy the film's budget could extend to. This scenario is basically 'Vampire Sister's unit of construction – the whole film is the same scene played and replayed, over and over. Oh, I forgot – there's some stuff to do with cops who are 'hot on the tail'. There's also a slightly pointless running thread about a monster in the girl's outhouse. Anyway, I'm all for messy low budget minimalism, and 'Vampire Sisters' is definitely that. This is where the sort-of 'awesomeness' of 'Vampire Sisters' resides. Maybe. Whatever, it's truly shameless and utterly unembarassed by its complete non-relationship to whatever 'cinema' or 'film' is supposed to be. This is totally the work of two dudes with a camera and some understanding acquaintances, and I'm into that. So I give it a tick, although many others will probably piss all over it. There's plenty of gratuitous PVC on show, a bit of nudity, an atmosphere of rank cheapness and slight bits of invention like a death by CGI fellatio scene (non-explicit). This is one of those old Film2000 DVDs so beloved of poundland habitues such as moi, meaning it boasts a shit sub VHS transfer which is probably at least partly in keeping with the source elements and is entirely appropriate to the material in question.

HARVESTERS – Another latter day Dohler production, again directed by Joe Ripple (I think). It's basically a remake of the last 'proper' Dohler flick, 'Blood Massacre'. Now, that was quite a screwy movie, with a nice line in random weirdness (I seem to remember the end was definitely quite WTF). But it was dogged by production problems, and Dohler was never satisfied with the cut that eventually made it to release. So this is a digital video re-jig, and pretty much amounts to a home invasion flick with a twist – the home in question belongs to some organ traffickers. How much you dig 'Harvesters' will depend on your liking for shot on video horror made with middle tier equipment at the turn of this century – yesterday's microbudget horror. That's a clunky way of putting it, but it gets to the heart of the aesthetic here – flat, bland, point and shoot. There's little of the old Dohlerism at work, although there may be plenty of Ripplerism. It has more in common with 'Vampire Sisters', but whereas that film mesmerises with its completely cheap non-cinema attitude, 'Harvesters' plays it straight (comparatively), for here is a film with plot, conventional narrative, a stab at characterisation etc. There's perhaps little to distinguish it, but it does have a smattering of CGI gore. What was needed was perhaps some of the character and eccentricity of Dohler's early works. As for me, I was entertained enough. Undemanding fare, and worth the poundland quid I gave up for it years ago.
