Well, did you think SN is a spy or not? Rewatch! There's a thought. That's the fun with this one I find. But this is me remember ...

ENJOY!!

What's that got to do with anything? He didn't strike me as rational enough to function as a spy. But then the whole spy subplot seemed rather inconsequential.

Okay. Heinrich (SN thinks anyhow) is Anna's lover (little does he know cough). But he is literally unbalanced by the thought of losing her. The allegory may be a tiny bit 'stretched' but who said art had to make sense anyhow??

That's my opinion ... do what you will with it.

Ploughing through mainstream dreck like The Mummy ETC is much like reading one of the kids books we sell in the shop. Give me something like Possession, Persona, Stalker ... something that makes me sit up and take notice.

Ahem.

Speaking of dreck ...

Lolita (1997, Adrian Lyne)
Whilst it resembles the source novel slightly more, this is toothless even by Lyne's own standards. The trailer at the time made me laugh like a ficking drain. Sadly the film is rather glum. What do you do with an underage squeeze?
Somewhat mystifying is the film's absolute refusal to show anything. Why make another version at all?
Considering how spotless Hollywood was back then
Still. This will conclude me watching things I said I never would.

Next up ...one last drive down to Rettendon in the shape of Essex Boys.

Essex Boys (1999, Terry Windsor)

As this one seems to be the furthest from the truth, it seems fitting to finish this particular sub sub sub genre of the Geezer variety. As a driver for a recently released all round scumbag, Billy is dragged into a life of violent crime. And Southend always looked so nice on telly .
Some nastiness here which tipped it over the usual cocaine & carnage of the other films set around this event.
But is still feels more like a Martina Cole novel.

Apparently one of the DPP 'examiners' fainted during the miscarriage scene, and it was this which led to it becoming a 'video nasty' and the subsequent banning

1988's Hellbound: Hellrasier II is one of the few truly great horror sequels. I saw the first film again recently, and I can never just watch that and not revisit this as well, because both go hand in hand, as this is more than just a follow-up, it’s a companion piece. I don’t feel the same about any of the other sequels, although I do have a soft spot for Bloodline.

**** out of *****

It's a very intense scene but not one which I would imagine anyone fainting over.

This scene however...

It's a good job that examiner wasn't present for the screening of Lars von Trier's Antichrist! I have no idea what they'd make of the 'grindstone' and 'scissors' scenes.
Justin101 and keirarts like this.

Now THAT... I almost did faint very gruesome and realistic looking.
