Trainspotting 2. 2017

After running away with the money from the previous film, Mark Renton returns to Scotland, free of herion to catch up with his friends Daniel "Spud" Murphy, who is still an addict and decides to write his memoirs, Simon "Sick-Boy" Williamson who is running his aunt's pub and hoping to open a sauna/brothel for his Bulgarian girlfriend Veronika and Frances "Franco" Begbie who is in prison still angry that Renton took off with the money and vows revenge.

After so many years of the first movie sequels like this are a bit hazy but this does deliver a proper sequel.

There is still the comedy/drama element to it and the discussion of drug addiction to the attempt failed suicide and the notion of side effects of detox.

The plot of the movie does start off a bit slow but does build up quickly and at a good pace and Begbie's anger problem is still the same. Like the previous movie it has a great soundtrack that does blend well with the film. 8 out of 10.

Starship Troopers (Verhoeven)
What fun. The bloody comm wouldn't play on the PS3, so settled on watching it.
Heinlen's book is for kids anyhow, so PV did the best thing and grafted his sensibilities onto it. Result? A loud, brash, satirical joy to behold.
Pilfered the sequels from mate today ....

Oh good luck with the sequels, the 3rd if I recall tries but fails to bring the whole satirical element back

My memory of them is a bit lazy but, though they don't have the edge or smart satire of the first film, I remember liking the sequels.

Society
The son of a wealthy family starts noticing strange occurrences and falls upon a conspiracy by the upper class.
Em....wtf did I just watch. It's fantastically horrible, the only slight complaint I have is the opening credits which kinda gives it away.

Dracula 1979

In 1913 Dracula travels to England to find a immortal Bride.

This take on Dracula is not close to the source novel, but a very good take on the characte played by Frank Langella who is not scary but a more of a classy charmer but also arrogant and intelligent.

Sir Laurence Olivier's performance as Van Helsing is brilliant, he comes across as a smart brave opponent for Dracula as a man who would never back down from a fight. Donald Pleasance performance as Dr Seward is a bit of a hit and miss, with Pleasance being a props actor he is seen holding things due to the fact his scenes could be cut or reduced and having more screen time.

Director John Badham knew how to make things stand out with low key light to create the perfect gothic set especially in Carthax Abbey set and in the tunnel below the cemetary and with John Williams score played along perfectly. Both this version and the version that came out two years earlier with Louis Jordan are worth a watch. 9 out 10.

The Escapees (1981)

On the run from an asylum for the insane, a feisty young girl and a forlorn female companion embark on a surreal journey with a group of traveling erotic dancers.

Apologies to all the Jean Rollin fans out there but i thought this was, for want of a better word - rubbish. Pretentious and plotless with two very unmemorable girls in Christiane Coppé and Laurence Dubas as leads, this was a disappointment all round, only the bloody finale with a sexy cameo from Rollin regular Brigitte Lahaie, nodded towards the directors earlier and far superior work.

Leaving the Gothic castles and beaches behind (obviously there is a beach in this one - there had to be, just not for very long) Rollin goes for a landscape of Ballard esq tower blocks, urban decay and er the docks, which he utilized better in both earlier The Night of the Hunted (tower blocks) and later works Killing Car (Urban decay / docks).

Sadly as a sexy thriller this fails and as a doomed romance it's, well, doomed.
