Mean Girls(2004)

lindsay Lohan stars as Cady, a bit of a naive girl who was previously home schooled in africa. and finds life a lot different when she starts at high school in the US.
and eventually falls in with a group of mean spirited girls known as the plastics who invite her into their clique.

This is one of the best out of all those generic teen comedy type films, and is very funny and well acted, especially by Lindsay Lohan and Rachel mcadams as the meanest girl Regina George. and a very funny performance too from Amanda Seyfried who i recently watched in Ted 2, playing the dim witted plastic Karen Smith.

With witty dialogue and a great screen play by Tina Fey, who also plays a role of a Maths teacher in the film. this is a top recommend, even for guys. 80 out of 100.

Full Metal Jacket 1987.

A recruit observes the dehumanising effects of Vietnam war from the tough boot camp training to the fighting in Da Nang.

Stanley Kubrick's vision to this masterpiece is stunning from the first half with the rigorous boot camp on Parris Island, Gunnery sergeant Hartman played brilliantly by R.Lee Emery who knew how to train men to be soldiers. The story is told by Private Joker played by Mathew Modine who wants to be killer but wears a peace symbol. Leonard Laurence who is nicknamed Gomer Pyle played by Vincent D'Onofrio who seems dim-witted and messes up a lot and the recruits fight back at him in which he snaps.

The second part is told by the front line Joker now a correspondence reporter sees how tough it is and how other soldiers seem to take pleasure in shooting Vietnamese and brag about it. There is excellent cinematography and a haunting soundtrack that makes it look and feel real even with the demolished burnt buildings. A film that can never get boring

AN ANGEL FOR SATAN (1966)

A statue of a woman is recovered from a lake. The locals talk of a curse should the statue ever be retrieved from the lake. A man is hired to restore the statue by the owners and shortly after, Harriot (Barbara Steele) arrives back at the family home and she is the image of the statue. Harriot begins acting strange, taking on a duel personality. Mysterious deaths occur and it seems the curse is true..

Barbara Steele's last Italian horror. Very enjoyable with a good atmosphere throughout. More mystery than horror but it is beautifully shot in black and white and has some nice gothic imagery.

A Study In Terror 1965.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are brought in by Scotland Yard to help find Jack The Ripper.

John Neville and Donald Houston play the duo of Holmes and Watson pretty well with a more comedic side, Frank Finlay as the Inspector who needs assistance from a consultant on the Murders on Whitechapel. Aside from being a small B movie this was entertaining and keeps the guessing on Jack The Ripper right to the end, it's not nail bitting, certainly worth a watch even from a small role for Barbara Windsor and a young Dame Judi Dench.

Death Wish 4: The Crackdown.
While he may have been in his mid-sixties when he made yet another in the Death Wish series, he doesn't appear to be slowing down much at all, at least in physical appearances, (could not comment on his mental state of mind) and yes he was no spring chicken, but I reckon he was still capable of handing out the odd beating to any Latino/afro-Caribean/Irish or Italian street punk who dared to deal drugs when Mr Bronson was on watch. The film itself has none of the urban grittiness of the first two films or any of the shock value scenes we had come to expect either, (not even a Jimmy Page soundtrack to blow people away with) and it lacks the third's almost comic book style, with its almost post-apocalyptic setting and second-rate villains that look like rejects from The Bronx Warriors. And yes it does sort of feel like everyone is just sleepwalking through most of the mayhem, and bloodshed, but every now and again the film does come free of its generic or is that geriatric action cliches. Lets be honest, if you are a wife or girlfriend of Chucks in these movies then your life expectancy is pretty low, and this film is no different, the only difference being here is that he blames the drug cartels, and unleashes his fury with the aid of a secret benefactor, who supplies him with all the necessary hardware. It is all entertaining right enough as long as your not expecting subtlety (who would from a Cannon Film), and the opening scene in the car park is genuinely gripping stuff. Have you noticed that when anyone goes into a Video rental shop or cinema in a Golan/Globus movie there always predominately showing Cannon films...

Cold Sweat(1970)

Charles bronson in top form as Joe martin a family man running his boat hire buisness in the french riviera. but has a secret past that comes back to haunt him involving some old army buddies and finds his family in danger.

Good old style no nonsence classic from Mr Bronson, with great non cgi car chases and action with proper acting and story.
And co-starring swedish actress Liv Ullman playing his wife. and james mason as the leader of the bad guys. and also look out for Bronson's real life wife Jill Ireland playing a dippy hippy, who popped up in loads of Bronson's films.

Good recommend for Bronson fans. 72 out of 100.

The Witch in the Window (2018)

An estranged father and his son move out to the country after he buys an old property he aims to do up to then sell. It's not long before a neighbour arrives and tells them about the history of the house and how it's not a good place to make a home. (No spoilers, sorry)

As much a story of building relationships as it is a horror film, The Witch in the Window is one of the best acted genre films i can remember seeing. Alex Draper (as the father) and Charlie Tacker (his 12 year old son) are so believable as characters and their conversations so realistic that you'll root for them all the way, in fact it's rare to see a chemistry this good in a horror film.

The horror when it comes isn't bangs and crashes and jump scares trying to catch you out, it's slow burning stuff that creeps into your veins, gradually becoming more chilling as the slender running time of 73 minutes progresses and reality becomes fractured in a haze of haunting images that genuinely gave me goose bumps at one point.

It's beautifully filmed and the camera lingers where others would give you jump scare glimpses, in fact one of the best scenes involves a camera slowly, silently, moving along a landing to a chair facing a window. It's simply composed but oh so unsettling at the same time.

I really enjoyed The Witch in the Window, it's as good a horror piece as i've seen in a long time.

This being the Crispin Glover redo. A hoot. Great sets. R Lee Emery as nemesis etc etc. When a chance encounter begats a new friendship, the titular characters options seem wider, but a bereavement makes proceedings turn a shade darker. Am tempted to watch the original now ...
