Next Of Kin
This slow burn horror from Australia has plenty of atmosphere and a few good jump frights but is surprisingly low on gore considerring the brilliant Not Quite Hollywood documentary on Ozploitation cinema pointed me to it. I guess I was expecting more gore, but atmosphere works for me too. It could do with a new DVD release as the only place I could see this was on You Tube.

Rampage
Uwe Boll shows that he is in fact the Wong Jing of western cinema. He throws so many cheap and nasty fims out (Most based on computer games, though this one isn't.) that sooner or later he must make one that has some appeal. This is almost Gus Van Sant like in it's depiction of an alienated youth who goes on a killing spree. Shockingly violent and at times difficult to watch due to it's graphic nature, the ending was not what I expected and actually makes it well worth sticking with.

Breath
This Kim Ki-Duk drama about a convicted prisoner who gradually begins a relationship with the woman employed to decorate his cell is played out with a minimum of dialogue. It also has a minimum of interesting moments. I'm usually quite a fan of Kim Ki-Duk's films with their visual style and often controversial content. This one just left me yawning.

It's A Wonderful Afterlife
This British comedy from the team who gave us the piss poor Bend It Like Beckham aims for Ealing type comedy and almost succeeds as we get the story of a mother trying to find the perfect match for her daughter who murders anyone who gets in the way of her plans only to be haunted by her victims. The first on screen death where the victims' stomach explodes after too much vindaloo is very funny but nothing else comes close. On the whole the film just tries too hard with only middling results.

Nah mines a bootleg DVD-R from ebay. Only way I can find these Italian post-apoc/mad max/escape from NY/Terminator 'homages'! Apart from the shamless tin of Bronx Trilogy of course. I would love more of these to buy in a boxset.

Recently re-watched 30 days of night. When it first came out I was non-plussed, it has not improved after a second viewing. Awful pacing and editing.

Whiteout. Starts off okay and then it's moribund, almost sleep inducing. I love frozen settings, especially movies in the south pole, but this was an oppurtunity missed.

Most of mine are on VHS.

It's a real shame that so many are still unavailable on dvd. I wonder what the problem is?

I watched BLACK RAIN last night. Excellent 1989 Ridley Scott film, parts of which were not unlike blade runner in terms of shadow and light and neon everywhere. I think he really acheived a great atmosphere, and Michael Douglas & Andy Garcia were both perfect in their parts. Shame the end bit had to be filmed in a Napa Valley vineyard instead of Japan, due to the red tape & costs involved in filming in Japan. Great film though.

I bet this would look stunning on Blu-Ray! The paramount DVD is a pretty poor transfer.

Just watched Kei Fujiwara's "ID". Bloody hell Never has so much crazed gurning graced a film! Totally mad film about pig farming and a human hog from the id. The film has about two minutes of narrative structure before it goes completely batshit, alternating between oddball slapstick and startling surreal images of sex, violence and totally out there, high weirdness.

Has anyone seen it?

Just watched ...

Salt

... The trailers made it look as cool as Bourne but turned out to be yet another tepid Hollywood outing. Predictable to the very end, and Jolie's "action" scenes were laughable.

Verdict: Must try harder!

I saw Salt this morning/afternoon and it was exactly what I expected: a fairly uninspiring thrill ride that moves along at a great tempo but I guessed the ending at about the halfway point.

It is really surprising. You would think that a bargain DVD company would put them out. I'd love to walk into poundland one day and see a rack full of them!

Watched a cheesy monster movie called 'Komodo' last night. Pretty low on cheap thrills.
