Sharks Of The Corn (2021)

Stop laughing at the back there ...
What a poster.
The film I put on sent me into snooze mode, so stuck this on to laugh at. It is truly terrible in that Asylum way. A disparate group of characters find their fates inexorably linked with ... a cornfield. The film you are all now making in your own heads would probably surpass the actual flick, as it has the painful performances, dialogue, action (HA!) that we've come to know and sneer at
Lawdy.

X (2022)

I knew what the main premise of Ti West's X was going into it; That of a group of young film makers who get permission to make a movie on the property of an elderly couple, an elderly couple who don't realise at the time that said film will be pornographic.

What i didn't know about was what came next. I'm not going to say as i found the film quite refreshing and original in it's script as to the what's why's and wherefores regarding the second half of the movie.

What i will say is that i very much enjoyed X. West gave the film a classic late seventies vibe which was embellished by Chelsea Wolfe's eerie score and some stunning photography. The scene of Mia Goth bathing in the lake was wonderfully shot and something that will linger long in the memory.

Despite me saying the film was refreshing and original, which it was, in other ways it was almost a homage to the seventies horror genre, in particular Tobe Hooper works The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and 1976's Funhouse not to mention Hitchcock's Psycho (1960).

The acting was uniformly excellent with believable characters throughout, the afore mentioned Mia Goth in particular really stood out, even more so when i saw the end credits.

New Years Evil (1980)

Roz Kelly plays the host of a music show who gets a series of phone calls during a televised New Years Eve show about murders that are about to happen.

This was so mediocre it's untrue. The interminable music show goes on forever with sporadic gore free murders happening just as the viewer is about to nod off.

I can't say i saved the worst for last because i watched Death Screams and Deadly Manor earlier in the month but New Years Evil comes bloody close.

Excellent review, Dem. I also thought X was extremely good and it's one of many films on my wishlist which I really want to watch.

Edit: I just looked at the HMV website and saw it's in the 2 for £20 chart Blu-ray section, so I think that and Men (which I haven't seen) might make a good purchase.
