Do cinemas still do this or is it a practice long gone?
When I was working at a cinema in the late 80's, all the advertising posters we sent out for promo purposes (i.e hanging in the local bus station and on the ferry between Gosport - Portsmouth) were supposed to be returned to the cinema where they were then returned to the film company along with the reels of actual films

Occasionally, some of them went missing tho, such as the Disney posters which the cinema manager pinched and the cult horror film ones that I pinched!!

The ones i mean are the ones they'd leave in piles in the foyer for people to take.

Do they still do this?

I think the Odeon hands them out to staff, if the staff don't want them then they go in the bin.

I am pleased to find that getting poster frames looks way easier and cheaper over here. Over in North QLD there was like one place you could get any large frames from, Target, and then the buggers stopped doing the black frames that were the best ones!

Argo (2012)

Ben Affleck's take on a true story that involves the CIA, Hollywood and the kidnap of American consulate staff by the anti-American regime of Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni in 1979.

The CIA are tasked with the almost impossible task of getting six Americans out of the country who escaped the storming of the US Embassy and are sheltering with the Canadian ambassador but time is running out for them so an exfiltration specialist (Affleck again and excellent with it) comes up with the plan of disguising them as a film location scouting crew for a Star Wars rip off film where desert locales are required. John Goodman and Alan Arkin - both superb - are the Hollywood execs who have to come up with what appears to be a genuine movie so their cover isn't blown

A rewatch and thankfully it stands up to a second and probably many more viewings. A gripping, superbly performed drama that is often very funny and beautifully deft in the way it adds humour to what is otherwise a nail biting and extremely serious subject matter.

You can tell how good a film is when the likes of The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin and Dire Straits allow their music to be in it.

Sev times I've asked at different cinema what they do with the posters and all say similar things, they get destroyed, they've to send them back and they'll destroy them, or they've to destroy them, but they say no one allowed them anymore.

Thanks for the reply gag.

Back then they'd have piles of mini posters in the foyer for punters to take away. Basically mini poster ads for forthcoming and current films.

All the ones in the photo and many, many more i own were taken home with me when i went to the cinema in the 90's. You didn't have to ask for them, they were there for patrons to take freely.

So due to the fact nobody actually knows what i mean, i presume that this is no longer practiced in cinemas.

With a bit of luck @nicholasrope will know as i believe said forum member actually works in a cinema.

I remember these from the late 90s early 00s. Especially in Odeon, they had stacks of posters lying around in the lobby ranging from small leaflet sized ones through to half sheets and one sheets. I used to get them loads when I was younger. Not sure when it stopped though, there was a period when I stopped going to the chain cinemas and only went to the local arthouse(ish) cinema in Liverpool and they didn't do it at all, and it's only in the last few years I've been back to Odeon and they definitely don't have anything in the lobby, and in fact most of the poster screens are digital.

The smaller posters are mainly for children's films as they have puzzles on the back.

As normal sized posters can end up on eBay, they are either sent back or destroyed.
