I believe (I may be wrong though) that Miramax did try and make it first, but were trying to buy up the sports series (can't remember the characters name) at the same time, but the whole deal fell through, so Coben sold it to Canet's team.

Anyway, on point (slightly), it really bugs me when people get up in arms about what they call a remake, when in fact it's just a new adaptation of some source material, rather than remaking a film.

People wouldn't class the new Spider-Man as a remake of Raimi's one, so why do it to other source materials?

The Yanks haven't any really big ideas a lot of the time hence the remakes or new adaptations or whatever....
Some have been better than others but overall the originals very much are the best
Anyway who cares about The Weinsteins?
Luc Besson and co produced a fine film

There was a similar debate about the Coens' recent release of True Grit which wasn't a remake of Henry Hathaway's 1969 film, but a new adaptation of Charles Portis' novel.

Although I'm a huge fan Canet's film, I'm prepared to give this new adaptation a go.

The problem with America and original film making is nonsense. They have been producing original films for over 100 years.

The reason remakes are so popular is because of the naivety of worldwide audiences. The majority of English speaking film watchers won't watch subtitled films, its a crying shame but true.

Unfortunately the same also applies to old films.

Its only a small community such as ourselves who have a problem with remakes. Most people don't know films such as My Bloody Valentine and Sorority Row for example, are remakes.

watched Hammer's To The Devil A Daughter last night which i thought was brilliant, very creepy and Christopher Lee was on Top Form. I'd like to see more films that center around satanic cults instead of exorcisms.

It's a tricky line though isn't it, especially since they kept Cogburn's eyepatch from the original movie, something which isn't in the original novel!

Oh, and I watched Resident Evil: Afterlife the other day. Woeful, artless, tedious, hideous nonsense. Not even good in a 'turn your brain off' kinda way. They should have kept all the slo-mo bits at full speed, that would have at least shaved a good 45 minutes off the running time. Also makes me sad than in 5-10 years when this 3D revival craze has presumably died down we're going to be left with looking at a bunch of films with constant shots of unnecessary items being flung into the camera. This makes me sad.

On a similar note I watched Jaws 3D the other night. I love spotting all the '3D' bits in these films that stick out like a sore thumb in 2D! By the way, am I the only one who thinks that Deep Blue Sea was almost a remake of this film? Some of the scenes/plot pieces from that film are almost totally lifted from Jaws, but with better special effects!

Just finished watching Death Wish once again. Some people call it dangerous when a movie's able to manipulate its audience - I call it art. Great direction, fantastic score, Jeff Goldblum's first movie appearance, a cool cop (Vincent Gardenia - marvellous performance), and - last but not least - Charles Bronson: one of the best Thrillers ever. Highly recommended.

Greetings!

I had a Blu-ray double bill of A Clockwork Orange and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest -- both great movies and both look and sound terrific in HD.
