Speaking of Otto, the director's latest film has just been banned in Australia! His new zombie-porn LA Zombie has been denied a certificate! It must be very extreme - apparantly the story centers around a bunch of aliens having necrophilic sex. Some would argue that this film may not have been banned if it was heterosexual sex? An interesting point nonetheless. Here's a link if you want more info - iafrica.com | entertain | movies | movie news 'Gay zombie porno' pulled

Another good article, with a quick little interview with the Melbourne International Film Festival's Executive Director can be found here. Just the main interesting points from that article: * "LaBruce admitted that his film did have explicit scenes of sex and violence, but said the version that was banned from the festival was a ‘‘soft core’’ version, where ‘‘it’s obviously a fake prosthetic. It’s a bizarre-looking thing with a scorpion’s stinger, it’s clearly not a human penis.’’" * "Film festival director Richard Moore said the festival has not yet decided if it will appeal against the ban..." * There is a poll at the end of the article, which I also just voted in, asking the question: "Do you agree with the Australian censor's ban on L.A. Zombie?" 80% have voted "Let moviegoers decide - screen the movie!" while only 20% voted "I trust the censor - the ban should stand" This is very interesting indeed. I just wonder how explicit the sex is in the film, as it may have a problem with the fact it shows both explicit sex and violence...which, if that is the case, I find a bit hypocritical, considering films such as I Spit On Your Grave*, Cannibal Holocaust and the future release of Salo* are all uncut on DVD releases in Aus. When it comes down to it, it's not even trying for a DVD release yet...its only at a film festival, which has already given a pretty clear indication of the content within the film via their website (which can be found here). Hopefully, there will be more info up on Refused-Classification.com soon!! *In saying that, apparently it was the contextual commentaries on ISOYG and documentaries on Salo which helped let them pass the Aust censors uncut. |

Over the past month or so you may have noticed that the posts on this thread have dwindled slightly and to be perfectly honest so has my obsession with zombies. Bigfoot took over, then I went all Pixar-y, so I kind of went of 'zombies' a bit. Hard to believe, I know. Perhaps that wasn't helped by the amount of awfully shitty zombie films I watched in one week - and that's an understatement. The Zombie Chronicles - the first zombie film I couldn't make it through - it's just THAT shitty. BUT, thanks to a good friend of mine, I have JUST finished watching a film, a film that has restored by zombie passion/obsession. Good thing? Bad thing? You decide. And that film goes by the name of THE VIDEO DEAD (1987) It is quite simply one of the best, and shamefully obscure, zombie films. This was the first time I saw it and thought it was an absolute blast - similar to Return of the Living Dead with it's extremely 80s feel. Not particularly gory, but the make-up is excellent AND the ideas are very innovative and different. I highly highly recommend tracking this one down and giving it a watch!
