Finished watching Ronny Yu's The Trail (1983) and I must say I had a good time.
It has an relatively interesting storyline,a stylish look (lots of fog, good creepy locations etc),a nice score (borrowed from The Thing it seems) and not too much comedy (it's played relatively straight).
But...the (tacked on?) epilogue feels really out of place (it's fun all the same though).
Overall I'd say it's a more than decent and at times very atmospheric "monster movie" (there's more to it actually).

Can't recall much of the former bar the memorable HK poster but the latter is an excellent Cat III shocker from what i remember and quite a tragic film too. Poor old Kent Cheng finds out to his detriment that loose lips do indeed sink ships.

I also own Bunman:The Untold Story and The Eye on DVD. The former title i also have on LD and i just wish we could see a decent R1 or R2 release of Centipede Horror. This looks suitably squirm-inducing judging by the trailer.

Close Encounters Of The Spooky Kind and it's sequel are well worth watching as is the first Mr.Vampire. The Dead And The Deadly and A Chinese Ghost Story too.

I forgot to add to my review of The Trail that this is a lesser quality dvd presentation by Fortune Star (materials?) but still ok.
Considering this is a rare film,I'm happy with the it.

Just ordered Ronny Yu's Bless This House, apparently his most "serious" horror film.
Can't wait to give it a spin.

Some reviews:

I forgot to add that The Happy Ghost uses the worst materials I've seen for The Legendary Collection.
Pic quality is not very good at times on that one so keep that in mind.

Btw I'm currently watching The Haunted Cop Shop.
Will put a review up when I've finished watching it.

Finally managed to watch Night Caller (1985).
I'd been hearing a lot about this so-called HK giallo and succeeded in getting the old UK vhs for a viewing (this has only had a vhs and vcd release).
While the film starts off really well, all giallo-like,it quickly changes it's approach and ends up being more of a HK thriller.
Not bad though and I found this rather enjoyable to watch.

Here's the 4 "HK gialli" I've seen in order of relevance as for the giallo elements.

1) Corpse Mania (1981)
2) He Lives By Night (1982) / The Red Panther (1983)
3) Night Caller (1985)

Corpse Mania is the only real full blooded HK giallo imho though.
Although set in the 30's it certainly offers enough giallo elements and eye candy to be on top of my list.

"Those who enjoy Italian horror film may be the most apt to appreciate the familiar tropes - the large, dilapidated house full of cobwebs, the young woman pursued on a dark and lonely street by the killer flashing his blade, the generous splashes of blood. There is a certain yuck factor that might challenge some of the more extreme moments in films by Lucio Fulci or Sergio Martino. Still, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Corpse Mania is a pretty good tribute to the pioneers of giallo." (coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com)

Btw I'm thinking of putting up a personal recommendations list (which will also include some dark thrillers) from the titles I've seen so far...anyone interested?

I could update it from time to time.
