Managed to buy the old vcd from a collector. It's widescreen (the vhs is pan and scan) so I have stopped watching the vhs and will give the vcd a spin when it arrives. |

Exorcist Master (1993) East meets west when an old church is reopened by a catholic priest despite the warnings of the local taoist priest (Lam Ching-Ying). There's an vengeful spirit and a western vampire (plus his victims who also turn into vampires!) to fight so everybody keeps busy! Fun lighthearted vampire horror with the usual comedy thrown in. Trailer (spoilers!) Last edited by bdc; 30th January 2012 at 04:07 PM. |

Ghost Legend (1990) / Spiritual Trinity (1991) Two very similar (they have the same director/writer and are from the same production company!) but still somewhat different HK horror films. While both star Kent Cheng, the first one has a brief but impressive performance by Wu Ma while the second co-stars Lam Ching-Ying. Both of them feature a vengeful spirit (the "ghost king" and a red dress ghost respectively) and a good wandering ghost who gets in harms way and are entertaining and even charming imho. A word about the dvd's... I purchased the Malay dvd of Ghost Legend and the HK dvd (Winson) of Spiritual Trinity. Both are fullscreen (they both looked a little bit squished to my trained eyes but somehow this was remedied by the "cinema zoom" ratio setting on my tv?) I've seen comparison caps of the HK and Malay dvd's of Spritual Trinity and the HK dvd is the winner. However the subs lead a life of their own and not all dialogue is subbed. The Malay dvd of Ghost Legend has decent subs but only Mandarin audio so I've decided to order the relatively cheap HK dvd (Winson again) to compare. Spiritual Trinity - first fight with the red dress ghost no subs in this youtube version (spoilers!) Last edited by bdc; 30th January 2012 at 04:20 PM. |

Recently watched Return of the Demon (1987)...talk about crazy films... This really is a fun horror/fantasy comedy thriller that could only be made in HK. Btw this film is famous for it's "egg scene" (which goes on and on but is great fun imho): From the vcd (dual audio as you'll notice) A female ghost is trying to reincarnate but needs to kill a virgin to do so...she notices "master" has done longevity training (he's 200+ years!) and tries to trick him in killing (smashing eggs) which would ultimately destroy his longevity... |
