Dario Argento stars in the latest film from Gaspar Noe, entitled 'Vortex'

From the review in 'The Guardian':

"The Italian film-maker Dario Argento (himself no stranger to shocking an audience) plays the unnamed Father, saddled with a heart condition and toiling over a book about the relationship of cinema to the unconscious that he will surely never complete. As he pads from his couch to his desk to the loo, his path crosses that of his wife (Françoise LeBrun), a retired psychiatrist who has dementia yet continues to write prescriptions that keep the household stocked with pills. These two love each other and care about each other’s welfare. But in old age they have become like a pair of zoo animals that happen to share the same cage, with each creature embarked on its own aimless laps of the walls.

Vortex’s premise and plotting stir inevitable memories of Michael Haneke’s Amour, which won the top prize here [the Cannes film festival] back in 2012. Except that Noé’s film is darker, grubbier, almost a 19th-century shtetl tale with its focus on hunched bodies and pained faces in dimly lit narrow rooms. It’s more formally inventive too. Noé’s big innovation is to shoot the entire thing in split-screen, with two handheld cameras trained on the protagonists throughout, even when they sit side by side on the settee or lie together in bed. “There’s that man following me everywhere,” Mother complains at one point and we can’t say for sure whether she is referring to her husband, the camera operator or something else altogether: the invisible presence breathing down both their necks."

Sounds like a carefully constructed cover up of a remake of "Cat in the brain" to me.

No way can I handle an entire film in split screen. I'll probably never see Vortex.

The Dark Glasses soundtrack is up on youtube. It's slightly underwhelming imo but it probably works very well in the context of the film. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YADJ...umJSdZeOljcrUU

Also there is a new clip of the film:

Italian Dark Glasses blu-ray comes out on the 24th of May. I've pre-ordered it from Amazon Italy. Link: https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B09...bluraycom0c-21

The same releasing label put out a House on the Edge of the Park Italian blu-ray with English subtitles (even though the cover made no mention of them) so I'm hoping that this will also have English subs. Fingers crossed.

I'll post on here whether this new Italian blu-ray has English subtitles or not. I don't mind watching the film with just Italian but obviously it would be awesome if English subtitles were included.

I know Shudder has picked up the US rights to Dark Glasses, so i'd expect it will get a UK blu-ray release through Acorn, who've released the Shudder exclusive movies over here.

I saw it's also getting a release soon in Germany, but no English subs unfortunately.

Just played at the Berlin Film Festival as far as i know, probably others as well. In the latest Dark Side Alan Jones interviews Dario and Asia about the film but before the interview in his opening paragraph he says this.

As a die hard Argentophile i'll always try to find good in my favourite directors output even i have to admit Black Glasses is a pretty anaemic event, an often ludicrous woman-in-peril affair lacking the suspense and stylish flair of his game changing 70s/80's masterpieces while repeating his favourite themes.

As always with Dario,I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it.

I even found good in his Dracula film!
