All i know is that when i saw them play Manchester Academy the older stuff was like being clubbed to death with an animal bone whilst Fuel for Hatred and the Volcano stuff was like being slashed to death with medical precision scalpels with the Rebel Extravaganza material a combination of the two.

Satyricon - Havoc Vulture

I like Rebel Extravaganza myself as well (I also really like their later albums), Satyricon are one of those bands that when you lsten back you can hear a steady transition and it's skillfully done, even as far back as Nemesis Divina they started to slow down a bit and put more power into their sound.

As much as I love the cold and fast style of the early 90s, I've never felt that it translates well to live concerts, only a few bands really pull it off, Mayhem being one of them.

The later songs certainly packed more punch live. It's difficult to explain. They lacked the fuzz of the earlier material and came over far clearer and precise and a hell of a lot more powerful. I'm going to use the same analogy when i say the songs were as if scalpels were slicing into your head.

Changing the topic slightly, but does 80s thrash count as 'extreme metal'. I certainly thought it was extreme compared to the Bon Jovi and Guns n Roses (and Poison 'Every Rose Has It's Thorn') I'd been listening to up until that point

Blast from the past, one of my favs...

I rather like Load and Reload.

I do tend to like the stuff others see as misfires. The experimental releases from bands. For example loving later Satyricon, also loving Morbid Angel's llud Divinum Insanus album and also thinking that A Grand Declaration of War is the best Mayhem album.

I remember when Grand Dec came out. I thought it was incredibly exciting music. I still do. It's playing at the moment on the stereo.

I love Grand Declaration of War as well, I think it's their 2nd best album!

I 'appreciate' Justice... but it's not one that I would think to listen to, it would be much better if it was mastered correctly in the first place, but Megadeth did it much better on 'Rust in Peace' a few years later.
