The article itself is utter nonsense. But if it wasn’t for that issue I would never have heard A Blaze in the Northern Sky.

For some reason when strangers come up to me in the street to talk music because of my t-shirts or vest I always get very awkward and I just had such an awkward interaction. Sitting here having breakfast a German couple come up and say oh Burzum and hand me a flyer for Under the black sun festival and they say have you heard of it and for reason I heard have you been and I said no the woman says it's our festival and has been going for 25 years. I just clammed up and said thanks

Propable think I'm a poser now

I can't handle human interaction

Happened to me a couple of times last week haha, first time I was wearing an Emperor tee and someone said cool shirt to which I replied totally dead pan “oh, Emperor” haha I’m lame. Second time I was wearing an Ulver t-shirt in Lidl and the checkout guy said oh I like you t shirt have you got “The Assassination of Julius Caesar” and for the longest time I had no clue what he was talking about and just said oh yeah. He must have thought I was an idiot, Ulver is one of my favourite bands and I have all of their albums on CD and LP and their book, box sets and 4 t shirts and this guy asks if I have their most famous album and I’m like uhhhhh hahah.

I think my problem is people always say whats your favourite album what's your favourite song I can't stand that I'm useless with names obviously I know albums but further questions and I go blank. There is never I like that band too there is always follow up questionare to fill out

Also I feel like I'm getting questions to prove I'm a fan of the music but I'm sure I'm not it's just people with the same taste wanting to talk to someone with the same taste in music. There are plenty of extreme metal fans in the world but I rarely see any in the wilds so when I do it's like a rabbit in the headlights.

I know exactly what you mean, the metal community is full of gatekeepers, it always has been. And at the end of the day, we’re in our 40s our short term memory is non-existent and we can’t hear a bloody thing because of going to gigs for 25 years haha, give us a bloody break haha.

I’m also very introverted and have borderline social anxiety so if someone came up and asked me what my name is I wouldn’t be able to answer them haha, let alone tell them what my favourite Burzum song is with a Norwegian title.

When I listened to just heavy metal I knew all the song titles on every album I listened to but like you said you start listening to Norwigian German and Swedish bands that's the end of that

The metal community is the most judgemental community there is honestly we are the freaks and losers so we should be more United but we are far from it.

Nobody is going to question some forty year olds about their music tees to see if they are actually into the music. It's not like you are kids born twenty years after the band split up and wearing your tee's to be cool.

Going off those posts the only gatekeepers and ones being judgemental are you two. All this after some fellow black metal fans who organise a long running festival were nice enough to offer Nordy a flyer and show an interest.

As for Justin's Ulver experience that's not gatekeeping by the checkout guy who clearly knew of Ulver by referring to an album title, that's simply Justin, in his own words, being extremely lame.

Out shirts are our culture, our reference point, our calling cards if you like, not a test of credibility. They are our colourful plummage, if we were birds in the rain forests we'd be showing them off to other birds not hiding away when another came over and jumping back into our nests till they'd gone away in case they wanted to, you know, interact.

Okay, credibility lecture over.

I have been questioned plenty of times about my musical tastes back in Ireland do you know the bands and so on by people you were than me. I didn't say the couple were judging me or gatekeeping I was saying that I made the whole thing awkward and came across like I didnt have a clue it's more a chat about how we are awkward when people talk to us and our knowledge evaporates because we can't handle human interaction.

How can people not think you aren't into the music. FFS? You'd pass for Johan Hegg most of the time with your long hair, beard and tattoos.

You don't look like that because you are a fan of the 1975.

I'm not like that with bands, i can usually chat happily about music to anyone. However if one of the clerks in Cex asks if i've watched anything good lately i may as well f*ck off straight away as i can't ever remember anything. Ever.

Are you having a good holiday? Did you manage to dodge all that rain you thought their might be?

I'm just going off personal experience the last time I was questioned was have I seen every day on my best live.

Holiday is very relaxing but between 10 and 6 it's very hard to walk around the heat is crazy everything is at a snails pace and constantly stopping for drinks
