Favorite albums of the 90s 1990 Entombed - Left Hand Path This is the album that made me a Death Metal fan I remember laying on my bed listening to this over and over again holding the cassette just looking at that cover and that image of the band standing in front of the cross so iconic. The tile track is on a different level especially the second half a work of art. 1991 Bolt Thrower - War Master It was hard not to put all of Bolt Throwers 90s albums on the list If this album doesn't get you moving than I'm sorry to say your already dead that's the only possible solution for this to not get the blood pumping. 1992 Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky I won't lie my first time listening to this I was like what the f**k is this I think I have finally reached my limit with music but then I just kept going back and eventually I understood the rest is history. 1993 Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon I bought this and A Blaze ... On the same day in a record store in Blackpool of all places while I was on holidays with my parents can't beat a ?1 chip and sausage after a day at the pleasure beach then back to the hotel with these two albums. As I said I didn't understand them at first but it all worked out for the best 1994 Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Satanas To me one of the very best Black Metal albums ever recorded not many albums sound as evil or atmospheric as this one you can almost smell decaying rotting leaves as you stroll through the woods the fog clinging to your cloths almost smothering you. The fact people this young were recording this still blows my mind. Flawless mastery. 1995 Fear Factory - Demanufacture There are a few better albums that came out in 95 but I have such a relationship with this album I can't pick anything else I still find it hard to listen to this album it brings me back to a different time and people who are no longer with us so when ever I feel like a trip back to those times this is the album I throw on. It was their appearance at Dynamo playing Self Bias Resistor that got me into Fear Factory cheers Headbangers Ball. 1996 Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood Neurosis isn't just music it's a journey and experience just amazing everything thing they ever did was amazing and again I have Headbangers Ball to thank for playing Through Silver In Blood video as soon as a heard the drums it was lovely at first beat. 1997 Emperor - Anthems at the Welkin at Dusk Like Darkthrone when I first heard this album it was the first time I had heard anything by Emperor I just wasn't prepared there was so much happing at once I couldn't handle it . With such a beautiful melancholy intro then bang your assaulted in the face. Did I mention I saw Emperor recently play this album live just Incase I didn't 1998 Death - The Sound of Perseverance The musicianship on this album is amazing such intricate riffs and almost jazz bass lines Chucks vocals are amazing also just a masterful album that seems to get unjustly hated on. 1999 Neurosis - Times of Grace I actually got yo see Neurosis on this tour sadly the one and only time I did. They played with Today's the Day and at the time the line up was Brann and Bill from Mastodon which is pretty amazing to see them before they started Mastodon and Viovod also supported. Like all Neurosis albums this is beautiful yet intense just a remarkable album like everything they did. Little funny side story about the gig Neurosis had a projection show going on at the time and there was a scene with Hitler and other war clip and a group of skinheads started to Sieg Heil and a group of old metal heads jumped them and beat the shit out of them . I actually met Steve Von Till and Dave Edwardson who were standing in the crowd watching Viovod. Crazy night amazing album and band.

Enjoying these lists, Nordy. Are these your definitive albums from the years in question or just the ones that fit the extreme category?

Your own taste is so diverse I wouldn't even entertain the idea of my own taste was so broad it would take years just to do one decade

Those years 86 - 94 were my musical discovery years. I danced to the records, i got pissed to them, i got off with girls to them and so many of them mean so much to me even now. It's like trying to choose one of your children over the others. Wouldn't be so bad but they were absolutely storming years to be a rock and metal fan. |

I'm going to start this task easy with the 2020's. Favourite album released by year. 2024 - Bruce Dickinson - The Mandrake Project* 2023 - Metallica - 72 Seasons 2022 - Ghost - Impera 2021 - Iron Maiden - Senjutsu 2020 - Armored Saint - Punching the Sky * The Mandrake Project is the only new release i've bought so far from this current year although i do intend to buy Opeth's new record The Last Will and Testament when it's released at the end of the month. |
