What a year 2006 was for extreme music.

Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive
Cannibal Corpse - Kill
Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
Deicide - The Stench of Redemption

For me, personally, there's never been a better year.

You will have to excuse the shadows

Continuing the descent into madness...

2010 - My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

2011 - Alice Cooper - Welcome 2 My Nightmare

2012 - Kreator - Phantom Antichrist

2013 - Motorhead - Aftershock

2014 - The Pretty Reckless - Going to Hell

2015 - W.A.S.P. - Golgotha

2016 - Darkthrone - Arctic Thunder

2017 - Depeche Mode - Spirit / Tarja - From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)*

2018 - Judas Priest - Firepower

2019 - Bruce Springsteen - Western Stars

*A special album that i adore but can only listen to it between December 1st and 24th each year. It gets so much hammer in those weeks it's untrue. Meanwhile Depeche Mode really ain't that Christmassy.

2000 to 2009

This was a hard one some amazing albums in this decade.

2000

Immortal - Damned in Black

I still remember buying this album while in Dublin on my way to see Slayer for the first time in the old SFX in Dublin and it was my first time in a famous metal bar in Dublin. The whole album is perfection.

2001

Darkthrone - Plaguewielder

So cold and evil sounding and Ted is having the time of his life blasting out some fantastic riffs.

2002

Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness

Just look at the track listing talk about riffs

2003

Enslaved - Below the Lights

This is when Enslaved became the Rush of black metal for me just an amazing breathtaking album really makes you feel like your on a cliff in Norway looking out over a fog covered forest and the sun is trying to breakthrough. Beautiful

2004

My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness Words of Light

A very personal album to me one I can barely listen to anymore it's almost too personal but it's still an amazing album a journey into darkness and despair in the most beautiful way possible if that is possible.

2005

Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness

A flawless album that brings a tear to my eye every time so emotional so empowering so motivational. Alan has talked about playing this entire album next year live for the anniversary bring it f**king on

2006

Mastodon - Blood Mountain

I have loved Mastodon since I first heard Leviathan they have changed over the years but they are always Mastodon amazing songs amazing musicians every album is a journey.

2007

Primordial - To the Nameless Dead

The exact same feelings as The Gathering Wilderness amazing album.

2008

Aura Noir - Hades Rise

Spoon of Trash pinch of Punk dash Heavy Metal and a cup Black Metal in a pot bring to the boil and a little chef kiss Aura Noir. You may need a neck brace afterwards.

2009

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

This is Mastodons masterpiece the subject matter is so dark and emotional and it's quite a personal album for me to as regards the subject matter. A mind blowing album from start to finish just a master class in song writing composition and musicianship.

I'll do 2010 to 2019 later.

Choosing between this and Blackwater Park is one of the things holding me up on this list.

I was stuck of a few years between albums it was hard to leave Enslaved -Isa off the list too the fact they released that a year after Below the Lights is crazy. MDB just edged it out

I love Mastodon I listen to them when I need to chill out they just relax me I get lost in their music. I love that they don't take themselves too serious but they take their music serious. I love that they are just their own thing really the influence of Neurosis is still strong but obviously they made their own path. Sadly we won't get anymore collaborations with Scott Kelly.

I remember seeing them at a club gig in Manchester with High on Fire. We had lively discussions afterwards about which band would go furthest. I was sure it would be High on Fire. I had the same discussion the next day with one of the guys who worked in Vinyl Exchange who was also at the gig. He also said Mastodon would be the band that went places. Nah. High on Fire said I.

I was so, so wrong.
