 Ozzy Osbourne - Live at Budokan The double O playing to a Japanese audience half of whom appeared to be in shirt and tie as though they'd just left the office. An enjoyable set list featuring a few from then current album Down to Earth although in truth they are the weakest songs performed. Still nothing from a middling Ozzy album is going to come close to the likes of Mr. Crowley, Suicide Solution, No More Tears, Crazy Train, Bark at the Moon and Paranoid when it comes to crowd excitement. The stage design is sparse to say the least but it lets you concentrate on what is arguably Ozzy's greatest touring line up - Drummer Mike Bordin, bassist Rob Trujillo and guitarist Zakk Wylde. Genitorturers - Society of Genitorture An interesting 35 minute club gig by industrial band Genitorturers featuring Morbid Angel's David Vincent on bass. Although being honest the music is merely a backing track to lead singer Gen's experimental BDSM stage show which is definitely not safe for work nor is it for the squeamish.  |

'Dance Craze' is a live documentary about the 2Tone movement from the early 1980's 2Tone music was a cultural phenomenon. Based in reggae and ska, the acts mixed in real-life experiences and played with punk sensibilities. I was a die-hard metalhead during this era, but the energy from these bands really appealed to me and although I didn't like all the groups, it was a great time to be alive. This truly is an invaluable film. All the big hitters of the time are featured - Madness, The Specials, The Beat, The Selector, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers In addition to featuring some of the best music of the time, it is also an incredible documentation of English socio / political history Filmed in some of the smallest, sweatiest and (almost certainly) oversold venues in England, it's a fascinating look at how concerts used to be. People reading this who only know big venues with crash-barriers and security in front of the stage are going to be amazed with how close we were able to get to our heroes - no health and safety measures in our day! As mentioned, the bands (and songs) featured were the best of the best: Nite Klub (The Specials) / The Prince (Madness) / Ne-Ne-Na-Na-Na-Na-Nu-Nu (Bad Manners) / 007 Shanty Town (The Bodysnatchers) / Three Minute Hero (The Selecter) / Ranking Full Stop (The Beat) / Big Shot (The Beat) / Concrete Jungle (The Specials) / Swan Lake (Madness) / Razor Blade Alley (Madness) / Missing Words (The Selecter) / Let's Do the Rock Steady (The Bodysnatchers) / Lip Up Fatty (Bad Manners) / Madness (Madness) / Too Much Too Young (The Specials) / On My Radio (The Selecter) / Easy Life (The Bodysnatchers) / Rough Rider (The Beat) / Man at C&A (The Specials) / Inner London Violence (Bad Manners) / Night Boat to Cairo (Madness) / Twist and Crawl (The Beat) / Wooly Bully (Bad Manners) / Too Much Pressure (The Selecter) / Mirror in the Bathroom (The Beat) / One Step Beyond (Madness) The picture and audio quality of the BFI dual release is exemplary (unlike some of the video links above, which seem to be taken from a nth generation VHS copy of the film) and as such this is highly recommended - especially if you were a teenager during this time

| Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000. Having had their Riot Act album on constantly for a couple of days in preparation of watching Pearl Jam Live at the Garden of which much of that album is played i naturally opted to watch Touring Band instead.  A 28 track live set filmed at 28 different shows across the US by three members of the bands crew. The image quality is almost bootleg as noted by Eddie Vedder himself in the accompanying booklet but it's so much more than that in reality whilst the sound is top notch and as Ed writes "Play it loud". So i did! Stone Gossard looks like the most unlikely guitar hero ever - dressed much like myself whilst watching - in what seemed like a t-shirt and pyjama bottoms at several shows - for a grunge band who don't do solos there's a bloody lot of them ripping into the crowd from both Gossard and Mike McCready. Highlights include scorching renditions of Rearviewmirror, Don't Go, Animal and show closer Neil Young's Rocking in the Free World. Elevation 2001 - U2 Live from Boston An arena show which is almost like a club gig for a band the stature of U2. Kicking off with two of my favourites of theirs in Elevation and Beautiful Day this show doesn't get better than it's opening two songs however other highlights include Where the Streets Have No Name, Desire, The Fly and a gorgeous With or Without You in which Bono and a girl from the crowd lay down as if looking at the stars as he sings to her. As long as she wasn't a 'plant in the crowd' and a genuine fan i'm guessing that will be one of the highlights of her entire life. R.E.M. - Perfect Square 23 hits and rarities including a never before heard by me Perfect Day performed live in the grounds of the stunning casino in Wiesbaden, Germany. I've reviewed this previously. It's my favourite music dvd bar none. Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II World Tour Live in Tokyo Basically the second half of a three hour show in Japan from the mammoth two and a half year tour for the Use Your Illusion albums. (I saw them twice. Firstly at Maine Road, Manchester in June 92 and then at the Milton Keynes Bowl in May the following year). The band and Axl are on top form with this ninety minute dvd only having eight songs performed from what is a 22 song set list - the rest are on the Use Your Illusion I dvd - but it doesn't matter. It's great watching them jam and Slash is the consummate guitar god. As for those eight songs? What songs they are. You Could Be Mine, Sweet Child O' Mine, So Fine, Rocket Queen, Move to the City, Knockin' on Heavens Door, Estranged (Stunning) and closer Paradise City. Kiss - Kissology Volume One. Cobo Arena, Detroit (26 / 01/ 1976) - A single 13 song arena show from what is part of the mammoth seven and a half hour Kissology Volume One. It's primal rock n' roll shows like this that captured the imagination of America's youth and made Kiss the self proclaimed 'hottest band in the world'. Going off this evidence they weren't bull-shitting. |

I have the Cobo Hall bonus disc from the day before the one i watched in Volume One. My Volume three doesn't have a bonus disc as it was a later pressing. It only cost a fiver though so i'm not too fussed.

| Goldfrapp - Wonderful Electric. Live in London Disc one of a two disc set sees Goldfrapp live at Somerset House back in 2003 supporting their second album Black Cherry. An enjoyable hour long outdoor concert with lowl lighting and stage effects. All the attention is on Alison Goldfrapp whose minimalist sensual vocals feel like she'd be just as much at home singing the torch songs of Kurt Weill in a smoky Berlin club in 1938 dressed as she is in what reminds of a mini skirted German army uniform complete with beret and knee length black pvc boots. Particular highlights for me are Lovely Head, Yes Sir and Deer Stop and the glam beats of Train, Twist and Strict Machine Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Born in the U.S.A. Live. Part of a mammoth show at Hard Rock Calling festival in London at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on June 30, 2013, there were eight songs before the Born in the U.S.A. album run through and nine following it. This is an excellent run through in crystal clear high definition of a classic American rock album with The Boss and his E Street Band in tremendous form. Springsteen naturally owns the crowd whilst long term lead guitarist Steven Van Zandt is every much his equal as he stalks the stage leading the three pronged guitar attack with Nils Lofgren and Springsteen himself. Such is the quality of musicianship here i really can't imagine you getting a poor show from the E Street Band. As for highlights? The whole damn album is a highlight with not a weak song to be heard. The dvd came as a bonus with the special edition of Springsteen's 2014 album High Hopes |

| Gwen Stefani - Harajuku Lovers Live A hugely enjoyable show that wouldn't surprise me if it was an inspiration to Japanese metal band Babymetal. Stefani's music is a fun and extremely lively electro pop style with various samples such as on hit single Wind it Up which uses a sample of The Lonely Goatherd from The Sound of Music. In fact Stefani's whole sound is probably best summed up by last but one song Bubble Pop Electric. Genitorturers - Live In Sin An actual live music performance by Gen, David Vincent etal which showcases their White Zombie inspired music rather than fetish genital torture. Enjoyable but clearly this was produced for more mass market appeal as all the sexual penetration going on was pixelated out. Song titles such as Cum Junkie, Asphyxiate, Lecher Bitch, Flesh is the Law and House of Shame probably tell you more about the band than i ever could. Pearl Jam - Live at the Garden A 2003 show at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden, this is three hours of Pearl Jam at their best. Pearl Jam are one of those live bands that you can dip into and probably shrug your shoulders and wonder what the big deal is, and then it clicks your ears become attuned and they become an almost perfect musical experience. Unlike the Touring Band dvd Stone Gossard takes a back seat here and it's Mike McCready who really lets rip on lead guitar. His work during Even Flow is worth the price of entry alone. Although part of the 90's Grunge explosion Pearl Jam are more a throwback to seventies rock, more the Black Crowes than Nirvana with Eddie Vedder's soulful voice captivating the entire audience on the likes of Daughter and Faithful. Highlights of the gig include a crazed thrash through Spin the Black Circle and favourites Black and Rearviewmirror. Fine covers of the Dead Boys Sonic Reducer and The Who's Baba O'Riley bring proceedings to a fitting and triumphant close. One of the bonus tracks Fortunate Son, a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover is a mix from various dates and showcases the sheer talent to guest with them on their tour. Johnny Marr, Billy Gibbons, Buzzcocks, Steve Earle, Ann and Nancy Wilson and Zak Starkey are the ones i remember a few days later. Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio Maiden headlined the 2001 festival in front of 250,000 fans, one of the biggest shows on earth, as part of their comeback Brave New World tour with Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith. I'd forgotten how gimmick free their show was back then (I saw them at Manchester Arena) using only three backdrops - Brave New World, The Trooper, The Clansman - and an Iron Maiden set closer with a Wicker Man Eddie. Meanwhile other than the backdrops the stage set seemed largely constructed of partly erected scaffolding. No matter it's a good concert dvd and always a joy for me to see them perform The Wicker Man, Sign of the Cross, The Clansman, Ghost of the Navigator and the excellent Dream of Mirrors among their usual live staples. Nashville Pussy - Keep on F*ckin' in Paris! Another small scale gig for Georgia's finest, this time nailing the French capital to the wall with gnarly rock n' roll such as Struttin' Cock, Keep on F*ckin!, Fried Chicken and Coffee and a storming cover of AC/DC's Shot Down in Flames. Guitarist Ruyter Suys once again front and center the whole performance so close she could kick out at the many fans who tried to grab her ass. Nosferatu@Cult Labs and Justin101 like this. |

| Emperor - Live at Wacken 2006 A storming headline slot at Wacken Open Air, intense yet catchy with it, Curse You All Men and The Loss and Curse of Reverence being highlights for me along with I Am the Black Wizards. Genuine proof that Black Metal bands can headline to huge stadium size crowds. The sound on the dvd is excellent and the image quality good. Arch Enemy - Live Apocalypse A huge headline show at London's Forum for the Swedish melodic death metal band. The 5:1 sound mix is head spinning showcasing the extraordinary guitar work from the Amott brothers whilst Angela Gossow, with that voice, is a towering presence. My only grumble is that My Apocalypse, the song the dvd got it's name from, is only part of the extra tracks recorded at a show at Manchester Academy along with another popular hit also not in the main set list - Nemesis. Disc two offers at over an hour and a half an extended look into life with Arch Enemy with plenty of docs and music videos. Incubus - Alive at Red Rocks Incubus aren't close to being a favourite band but the Red Rocks ampitheatre in Colorado is a stunning natural back drop.A concert that's always worth a watch to see cracking songs like Megalomaniac, Nice to Know You, Wish U Were Here and Talk Shows on Mute along with an interesting visual display for certain tracks. Despite always enjoying this concert my mind does wander during some of the less interesting songs to wishing i had concerts of other more favourite bands playing this spectacular natural cliff feature.
