2nd August, 1968. The Who opened for The Doors at a concert held at The Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY in front of a 16,000 strong audience
During The Doors' set Morrison incited and taunted the audience with his theatrics, rolling around on the stage, playing with the crowd and making the air even more tense. Towards the end of the show fans rushed the stage, with several getting hurt in the melee. Among the injured was a girl who jumped onto stage and grabbed at Jim Morrison. Jim pushed her away, and a bouncer got a hold of her and threw her to the floor, where she gashed her face, resulting in gushing blood.
Pete Townshend recalls: "I took her backstage and got her help and when The Doors had finished their set, I went to Jim and said "Listen, you should talk to this girl". He went to her and was really sweet with her...He was really worried about her...He was very nice to her...He apologized and gave her some money"
This led Townshend to write the song 'Sally Simpson' for the 'Tommy' album
