13. Raiders of the Lost Ark – Raiders March

I'm surprised this wonderfully evocative and extremely popular piece of music is so (relatively) low – I thought it would be comfortably in the top 10

12. Chariots of Fire – Theme

I knew this would be high up the list – it's such a perfectly judged and timeless composition by Vangelis

11. Harry Potter – Suite

I said Saving Private Ryan wouldn't be the lowest of John Williams' scores, and I was right. This is a lovely piece of music and it's no surprise to see it in the Classic FM Movie Music Hall of Fame top 20 – I wonder if Williams has any in the top 10.

10. The Mission – Gabriel's Oboe

A brilliant film score, but not the highest placed of Ennio Morricone's compositions

9. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Theme

Back-to-back entries for Ennio Morricone, and what a piece of music to do it with

8. Jurassic Park – Theme from Jurassic Park

John Williams is 91 years old, he's still composing, and this is one of the most iconic pieces of music in his illustrious career

7. Dances with Wolves – John Dunbar theme

When I was guessing about what film soundtracks would appear near the top of this list, I completely forgot about John Barry's wonderful soundtrack to Kevin Costner's superb Western, and shame on me for that.

6. Wilde – Main Theme

You can tell this was voted for by Classic FM listeners because I wouldn't have put this in the top 50 of a list, never mind the top 10.

This is because I like it – I think it's a wonderful piece of music – but because I haven't seen Wilde in years and can't remember the last time I heard anything by Debbie Wiseman.

I'm guessing it features heavily on Classic FM and deserves to be on the list because it's a great piece of music.

5. Gladiator – Earth

A beautiful piece of music and one deserving to be Hans Zimmer's highest-placed entry in this top 100 list.

4. Out of Africa – Main Theme

Another piece of music that I completely overlooked when thinking of what would be at the top of this list, but that's probably because I'm not a Classic FM listener. It's a lovely piece of music to a film that is a visual and aural treat, but is it worth a place in the top five?
