What did you think of the new Autechre? It's been likened to their warmer sounding earlier albums (like their rather beautiful 2nd album Amber) but I personally don't feel that very much. It's still very cold and abstract music in my opinion.

I think the first 3 albums are amazing, beautiful and dark at the same time. The later albums are definitely a harder listen and a more of an aquired taste. I find 'Untilted' and 'Quaristice' un-listenable and they leave me feeling a bit empty, however i saw them on the 'Untilted' tour and they were incredible live. i just don't think those albums translated to vinyl well.

I agree with you that the new album has taken a different approach from the earlier stuff. I have only given it a couple of listens so far (as i always make a point with Autechre of making time to listen) so the jury is still out. However it has melody, structure and texture, which i think the 2 previous albums are lacking in. I think with repeat listening I will grow to like it alot, but i don't think they will ever go back to sounding like the first 2 albums as its just not like Autechre to go backwards. It is a bit cold and abstract, but i quite like that in some music

Like them or not the one thing you can say about them is they are inovators and always trying to move their music forward. Nobody sounds like them and that's a pretty rare thing for music these days.
