Found that out after I bought it,but the packaging's great. I don't condone it,but the ebay seller never exactly advertised that fact. What gives it away is the fact that the disc inside is German only, and you get 2 dodgy dupe dvd's-one English language and another 'extended version'. Is there any other dodgy booters in hardbox land?

Well, there are aplenty! The reason for that is that apart from ouright banning movies, theres a thing called "Index". Movies that are "indiziert" (being put on said index) can only be sold to adults behind the counter, advertising those movies in shops or German stores is prohibited ... the reason you won't find those Hardbox releases on Amazon is (apart from their limited availability) that most of them are released unrated which immediately means that you can't advertise them ... and yeah, many are actually banned (beschlagnahmt) and even more are indiziert. My advise would be to check the OFDB before you buy a German DVD. XT, X-Rated, 84, CMV, Anolis etc. should be safe to buy from, if you can't find a label on the box that's usually a bad sign ... but it doesn't even have to. Sometimes, a label does have the license but since the movie's banned (which makes a release illegal) they just don't put their logo on the DVD. The OFDB helps you to figure all this out and since it has many alternate titles listed you should find movies with whatever title you know. |

Are Astro a bootleg company or are they legit?

Astro are legit BUT due to a court ruling a few (I think 5) years ago the (now former) owner of Astro is forbidden to release unrated movies. So the last time (the old) Astro released many movies from their film stock was five years ago. I've heard that some of the Astro DVDs you can buy now are actually reprints made by shops or other sellers so that the films would remain available - think about this: DVDs made five years ago in smaller quantities and are still available to this date. Something sounds a little off. You can notice some of them by washed-out, unsharp looking covers. The most certain identification mark that you have a legit Astro disc and not a reprint is if you look at the inner ring (data side) and find a number starting with NF. I don't think that every Astro disc without the NF number is a reprint but in German forums, but if someone sells an Astro disc (the blue spined ones ("Blaurücken")), they're usually asked about the NF number. BTW: Astro is being reanimated and they will start releasing new titles in the classical Blaurücken ("Kult Klassiker Ungeschnitten") design in a couple of months. What I've written in the last couple of lines logically does not apply to those movies. 8) |
