Thanks Vince, I was hoping somebody would. It was classified in 1998 several years before Rules of Attraction byt this was still after they cut Strange Behaviour (after passing it uncut in the 80's). Without asking the BBFC I really don't know for sure why they cut Strange Behaviour in the early 90's. Was it due to the suicide technique or was was it due to a scene of self inflicted bloody violence that was now considered unacceptable. But they appeared to have passed the scene in The Craft after. Will be interested to hear what you have to say.

Didn't they cut a bit out of Boy Eats Girl where he puts a knot in the noose, or was that the Irish censors?

I just quickly checked the VHS of The Craft. Re wrist-slashing, one is a scene and the other is a reference. Neve Campbell notices the vertical scars on Robin Tunney's arms. When she asks what they are, Tunney says she'd slit her wrists with a kitchen knife. Campbell looks surprised and says "You even did it the right way". The other is a scene. At the end of the film Fairuza Balk slashes Tunney's wrists with a dagger (in brief closeup), though the cuts are the traditional way. Last edited by vincenzo; 29th April 2008 at 12:10 PM. |

Found the confusion: "Notably, the movie was the first non-pornographic movie for some years to be banned by the Irish Film Censor's Office, due to a depiction of suicide. This wasn't cut from the movie and the appeals board overturned the ban, issuing a 15A rating." |

Thanks Vince for getting back so quickly. So the technique wasn't actually shown then. |

No it wasn't. I watched the VHS on fast-forward but I'm sure I didn't miss anything. The results of the vertical slashing are seen (and described) but not the footage itself. If the BBFC DID decide to cut anything in the future it could possibly be the line "You even did it the right way" though I doubt they will. There's definitely a goof in the film at the end. When Balk slashes Tunney's wrists she asks why the old scars are bleeding again. In fact she actually makes new ones, as the slashing is across instead of down. |

Vince RE NY RIPPER (vipco) Just checked and its a black cover release but when I opened it it was a shiny silver disc both sides. ( as cannibal god was but it has a film on both sides ) I bought it at a VERY reputable specialist store and never got around to watching it as i'd seen it not long before I bought the disc on VHS. In fact todays the first time I opened it from I bought it. I checked another VIPCO disc I bought at the same time and it has a picture side. I checked the quality and its a good standard. I have another 2 VIPCO DVD's from this store that are shiny both sides but they both have the film name printed round the centre hole with a number, NYR just has a number. I dont wish to name the store as I shop there regularly and they had my VIPCO films always on order for me.As soon as a new release came in they phoned me and put it aside. Plus if it is'nt legit it might have been one of the assailants personal copies transfered from video, as I dont see them selling copies. Sorry for any confusion. Sucide is listed as a longer RT on European prints than VIPCO's UK dvd plus it dosent have their usual UNCUT banner stamped on it, so outta all the film I assumed the wrist scene would suffer as that method seems to get trimmed in some films. I lost interest after the 1st scene and didn't really pay much attention to rest of the film as it was so badly acted. Im surprised you found this depressing Angel as I found it hard to take seriously due to the extremely poor actors. Last edited by vipco; 29th April 2008 at 04:15 PM. |

Your New York Ripper DVD sounds very much like a promo release. I doubt that it's a bootleg (though it certainly happens) but often Vipco, and many other companies, would release promotional, advance or review releases for films that were later cancelled. They did the same with the VHS of Night Of The Bloody Apes. NYR was definitely never issued on DVD until the Shameless release. So it sounds like a nice promo you have there, Vipco. |
