NEW US/CA TITLE: Slaughterhouse-Five (Blu-ray)

Release date: December 3rd

Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time in this timeless adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut by acclaimed director George Roy Hill.

"Description

BILLY PILGRIM LIVES – FROM TIME TO TIME TO TIME… Past, present and future collide in darkly satirical fashion in Slaughterhouse-Five! Based on Kurt Vonnegut’s classic 1969 novel, this tale of time travel and alien abduction emerged as part of a wave of more cerebral science-fiction films in the late 60s to early 70s, elevating the genre beyond the B-movie fare of previous decades. Upstate New York, 1968. Mild-mannered Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks, The Sugarland Express) finds himself “unstuck in time”. Traveling back and forth across the entire span of his existence, he experiences key events of his life in a random order, including his formative years, the firebombing of Dresden and finally, at some undefined point in the future, his surreal adventures on a distant planet. Praised by Vonnegut himself for its fidelity to his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five boasts assured direction by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and a memorable score by renowned concert pianist Glenn Gould. Now exclusively restored in 4K, Slaughterhouse-Five shines like never before, reinforcing its timeless appeal."

NEW UK TITLE: The Vengeance Trilogy (Blu-ray)

Release date: December 9th

Take a lift down into Park Chan-wook’s visually stunning masterworks of revenge, presented in this new 4-disc collection with a massive array of extras.

"This collection presents Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, the lauded trilogy of revenge films directed by internationally acclaimed Korean director Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden).

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance tells the harrowing tale of a young deaf-mute man, Ryu, who kidnaps a wealthy businessman’s daughter in an attempt to extort money to pay for his sister's kidney transplant. A terrible accident sets the child’s father on a fateful path of revenge. Oldboy tells the grisly story of Oh Dae-su, a normal man inexplicably imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he searches for answers and retribution. Lady Vengeance tells of Lee Geum-ja, a model prisoner serving a sentence for a murder she did not commit, who plots a dastardly revenge against the real murderer when she gets out.

NEW UK TITLE: The Exorcist III (Blu-ray)

Release date: December 9th

Thoughtful theological themes are paired with scenes of sheer terror, in this true heir to William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece.

"The true heir to William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece, The Exorcist III is a hellish horror detective story that pairs thoughtful theological themes with scenes of sheer terror.

The personal vision of Blatty (the acclaimed author of The Exorcist), The Exorcist III is set 15 years after the events of the first film and sees Lieutenant Kinderman (George C. Scott, The Changeling) investigate a series of horrific murders that follow the modus operandi of the notorious Gemini Killer... who died several years earlier in the electric chair. After his friend Father Dyer (Ed Flanders) is murdered in his hospital bed, Kinderman’s investigations lead him to ‘Patient X’, a psychopath housed at the same hospital who claims to be the Gemini Killer, and who knows intimate crime scene details. Their encounter leads to a fiery climactic confrontation between the eternal forces of good and evil...

The Exorcist III boasts some of modern horror’s most unforgettable scares and exceptional supporting performances from Jason Miller (The Ninth Configuration) and Brad Dourif (Dune). Blatty’s film is presented here in both its original theatrical cut and the recently assembled ‘Legion’ director’s cut."

I've read the book a couple of times and listened to the audiobook (superbly narrated by James Franco). For those who have read the book, is this film adaptation any good?

Part of me wanted this to be a 'must buy' release, but it looks very similar to the Shout! Factory release from a few years ago, so it won't be the pre-order I was hoping for.

Honestly the film is a 3 star affair. I don't really think it's easy to duplicate the way Vonnegut injects humour into the written word and the vibe of the book doesn't translate as it should. Having said that if you like the book which it seems you do then i think it's a must buy movie.

The Fabulous films release from 2017 is a mere £5.99 on Amazon. There aren't any extras but if it was me i'd go for that one. If you adore the film you could always pick up the Arrow release in an HMV offer a few months down the line rather than forking out £20.

That seems like sound advice.
