  • Wrote the Target novelisations of 'Time-Flight' / 'Mawdryn Undead' / 'Planet of Fire'
  • During 'The Robots Of Death', the Doctor described Robophobia (the irrational fear of robots) as Grimwade's Syndrome. Key Crew working on WARRIORS' GATE who have previously worked on the show:
  • John Nathan-Turner (Producer)

Who: Before And After #1605a / Doctor Who: Key Crew: Story #114 ? Warriors' Gate
Name: Graham Harper [1945 - ]

Role: Doctor Who: Director [19 episodes]
Year(s): 1981 / 1984 / 1984 / 2006 / 2007 / 2008 / 2009
Stories: Warriors' Gate [See note below] / The Caves Of Androzani part 1 - The Caves Of Androzani part 4 / Revelation Of The Daleks part 1 - Revelation Of The Daleks part 4 / Rise Of The Cybermen - The Age Of Steel / Army Of Ghosts - Doomsday / 42 / Utopia / The Last Of The Time Lords [See note below] / Partners In Crime [See note below ]/ Planet Of The Ood / The Unicorn And The Wasp / Turn Left / The Stolen Earth - Journey's End / The Waters Of Mars

Role: The Sarah-Jane Adventures: Director [6 episodes]
Year(s): 2007 / 2008
Stories: Whatever Happened To Sarah-Jane part 1 - Whatever Happened To Sarah-Jane part 2 / The Temptation of Sarah-Jane Smith part 1 - Enemy of the Bane part 2
Note(s):
  • Was the uncredited director on some scenes of 'Warriors' Gate'
  • Was the uncredited director of some scenes of 'The Last Of The Time Lords'. According to the DVD commentary, Freema Agyeman states that the 'full' director fell down some stairs and injured himself, and so some parts featuring Martha Jones were actually directed by Graeme Harper
  • According to the DVD commentary, he was the uncredited director of additional material in the episode, namely the reshoots featuring Bernard Cribbins in place of Howard Attfield, and Rose's cameo at the end
  • At time of writing, he is the first (and only) director of stories in both classic Who and also Nu-Who
  • Before becoming a director, he was assistant floor manager on 'Colony in Space', 'Planet of the Daleks' and 'Planet of the Spiders'
  • Was production assistant for 'The Seeds of Doom' and 'Warriors' Gate'
  • Appeared in an uncredited on-screen appearance in 'Colony in Space', where a photograph of him in costume was used to portray Martin Jurgens, the Adjudicator whose credentials had been stolen by the Master. The same photograph was later reused in 'The Brain of Morbius' to portray a past incarnation of the Doctor
  • His work on 'The Caves of Androzani' was notable for his highly innovative directorial style at the time. Unlike his predecessors, who would observe filming from a booth and relay their instructions via the production assistant on the floor, he would work from the actual set, giving instructions to the actors in person. Additionally, he utilised more diverse and cinematic shots, offering freer and more dynamic camera control in filming. His energetic, personal style of directing was widely praised by the show's staff and audience, with Peter Davison stating that he would've stayed on the show longer had Harper's methods been more prevalent throughout his tenure
  • Was lined up to direct the unproduced series 23 story 'Yellow Fever and How to Cure It' and also the 1993 planned 30th Anniversary film 'Lost in the Dark Dimension'
  • Directed the 2007 mini-episode 'Time Crash'
  • Wrote about his experiences directing 'Doctor Who' in his book 'Calling the Shots'

Who: Before And After #1605b
Name: Paul Joyce [? - ] [Note: Different sources give his date of birth as 1940, 1941 or 1944]

Role: Director [4 episodes]
Year(s): 1981
Stories: Warriors' Gate part 1 - Warriors[ Gate part 4
Note(s): The production of 'Warriors' Gate' was not an easy one! Complications with the production of the story led Joyce to undertake an effort to rewrite its script. He then argued with both producer John Nathan-Turner and also lighting director John Dixon over differing visions about how to capture the story. He was subsequently fired from his position after the dispute, leaving then production assistant Graeme Harper to oversee the latter half of the script. However, he was quickly re-hired after the issues with productions were worked out. Because of this, he is the only director on 'Doctor Who' to have been fired and then re-hired
