When Elisabeth Sladen who played companion Sarah Jane Smith left the show Tom wanted to go it alone without a regular companion. Something the production team disputed. However they did let Tom have one story as a lone Time Lord (Kind of, except it was set on Gallifrey and there were hundreds of them about) in the controversial and ground breaking story The Deadly Assassin (1976). ![]() |

Tom was forced into accepting a new companion following The Deadly Assassin and he was lumbered with 'the savage' Leela as played by Louise Jameson. At the time Tom and Louise didn't get on at all, she felt Tom hated her and was very difficult to work with. Thankfully over time their relationship healed and they are now close friends. ![]() Tom with Louise in her debut story The Face of Evil (1976) |

Following Louise and Leela's departure from the show, Tom's Doctor was given a new companion. This time an equal in fellow Time Lord Romana, initially played by Mary Tamm during the 1978 Key to Time season. Following her regeneration the character was played by Lalla Ward who Tom took an instant liking to. The feelings were mutual and they married in December 1980. Here's Tom and Lalla on location in Paris for City of Death (1979) ![]() |

Tom's final appearance as the Doctor was in the 1981 four part story Logopolis. In it he had to team up with his greatest adversary, The Master, (Anthony Ainley) in order to save the entire universe from collapse. However this had devastating consequences for the Doctor. ![]() And so this story ended Baker's 7 year tenure as the Time Lord, this currently makes Tom Baker, as of 2025, the longest serving actor in the role of the Doctor and the one that audiences of the series associate with the most. From Robot to Logopolis, you were fantastic! Cheers, Mr. Baker. ![]() The end. Or was it? |
