It wasn't quite the end.

Tom refused to do anything to do with the show after he left, including the 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors in 1983. However decades later in 2012 he began working with audio production company Big Finish on newly created stories. His first set were titled The Fourth Doctor Adventures and he worked with former colleague Louise Jameson who reprised her role of Leela, which was quite ironic given Tom's thoughts on the character back in the day. In subsequent series he also worked with Mary Tamm (Romana I), Lalla Ward (Romana II) and Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) who reprised their former companion roles. His final role for Big Finish was in Return of the Cybermen which was released in 2021.

Then a year later in The Day of the Doctor, much to our shock and utter joy, Tom reappeared in the show for a beautiful scene opposite current Doctor Matt Smith playing a character called the Curator. An elderly version of the Doctor, now retired, who had become curator of the Under Gallery where he looked after Time Lord paintings.

Tom as the Curator with Matt Smith as the Doctor in The Day of the Doctor.

In 2017 Tom Baker returned to the TARDIS for a final time as he filmed a scene as the Time Lord for the end of the dvd release of the uncompleted and unaired 1979 story Shada. He has also contributed newly filmed extras for Doctor Who's ongoing series of Blu-rays titled Doctor Who: The Collection.

In January 2025, the legend that is Tom Baker is 90 years old and is happily retired.

"91 today? Who me? Are you sure about that?"

It's Tom's birthday, but don't tell him.
