I watched about the first half of Torchwood season 1 and that was enough for me.

The best spin-off series was 'The Sarah-Jane Adventures', which (in my opinion) often eclipsed the parent show
Some elements of Children of Earth wasn't too bad + I did enjoy Reset by J. C. Wilsher, but I do agree with you, the stories in Torchwood were very patchy affairs indeed. Miracle Day was flipping awful, couldn't watch it. Sarah Jane was the only spin-off that actually had mature stories with a creative thought behind them that worked exceptionally well. Great shame.

I struggled through Series 1 of Torchwood and found it just unwatchable in the end. The worse part was a friend buying me the BBC DVD box set as a birthday present. I then took the decision to sell it on ebay. Either that or chuck it in the bin.

I didn't mind Torchwood. The first two series had a fair bit of dross i admit but also some excellent episodes as well. Countrycide as mentioned by Susan was terrific, Out of Time was another brilliant episode. I thought Children of Earth was superb but never bothered with Miracle Day at all.

As for The Sarah Jane Adventures, i enjoyed the two stories that featured the Doctor, especially the Matt Smith / Katy Manning one, but the rest i thought just a bit too child friendly and lacked that dark edge that the parent show has always had.

I do think at some point this year i'll buy the complete series and get stuck in and re-evaluate it.

Interesting. Am liking Katharine Kelly's performance, quite a change from Corrie etc.

talons of weng chiang

One of my favorite classic story's, with great period detail and atmosphere. Part sherlock Holmes part phantom of the opera, fu manchu with a little my fair lady throwing in

Great supporting characters in the form of Jago and Lightfoot and with giant rats, leela kicking ass and creepy midgets/ dummy's what's not too like.
