The Classic Who DVD Guide

#1: The Five Doctors

'The Five Doctors' was the first Classic Who DVD to be released

Release date - November 1999

Back cover info:
"Someone is taking the Doctor's past selves out of time and space, placing them in a vast wilderness — a battle arena with a sinister tower at its centre.

As the various incarnations of the Doctor join forces they learn they are in the Death Zone on their home world of Gallifrey, fighting Daleks, Cybermen, Yeti, the Master... and a devious Time Lord traitor who is using the Doctor and his companions in order to discover the ancient secrets of Rassilon, the first and most powerful ruler of Gallifrey.

The Five Doctors was originally broadcast on 25 November 1983, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Doctor Who. This new version of the story features extended scenes, previously unseen sequences, new visual effects and a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. Not intended to replace the original edition of this story, this is an alternative version which uses state-of-the-art technology to embellish and enlarge one of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever"

Special features:
Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack
Music-only option

*Note - Although this is described as being a 'Special Edition' on the front cover, it's actually a bare-bones DVD — the title refers to the fact that this is the 1995 special edition of the story, containing extended scenes and new visual effects and NOT the original 1983 broadcast version. However, the story was later re-released as a 2-disc 25th anniversary edition

Release date March 2008

Back cover info:
"The Doctor's past incarnations are being snatched out of time and transported to the Death Zone on Gallifrey, where they are reunited with some old friends and pitted against their deadliest enemies in the Game of Rassilon. Someone is manipulating the Doctor and his companions in order to claim the most ancient and powerful secret of the Time Lords... but can they survive the challenges and uncover the traitor before it is too late?

This 25th Anniversary DVD set contains the original 1983 TV version of The Five Doctors, plus the Special Edition from 1995 featuring new effects and extended scenes"

Special features:
Disc One - The Transmission Version
• Commentary with actors Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), Mark Strickson (Turlough), Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier) and Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman)
• Isolated Music - isolated synchronous music from the story
• Subtitle Production Notes
• Celebration (dur. 52' 13"). Producer Steve Broster takes a look back to 1983 and the celebration of Doctor Who's twentieth anniversary, including the production and transmission of 'The Five Doctors', the media interest and the BBC Enterprises' event at Longleat House.
• Trails and Continuity (dur. 19' 08") - BBC1 trails and continuity announcements from the original 1983 transmission and the subsequent transmission of the story in four parts. The full opening title and closing credits of the four-part version are included for completeness.
• Photo Gallery (dur. 8' 12")

• Commentary with Peter Davison (The Doctor) and Terrance Dicks (writer)
• Isolated Music - isolated synchronous music from the story
• Subtitle Production Notes
• The Ties that Bind Us (dur. 25' 55") - Brendan Sheppard's featurette takes a look at the subtle (and not so subtle!) links to the show's past and future contained within the story of 'The Five Doctors'
• Five Doctors, One Studio (dur. 18' 45") - inside the studio for the recording of the story's final scenes, the only time that all the Doctors were on set together
• Out-takes (dur. 6' 35")
• (Not So) Special Effects - (dur. 8' 58") - tin-tacks, gaffer tape and high-explosives
• Saturday Superstore (dur. 10' 28") - Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and Mark Strickson join Mike Read to talk about the series and to take calls from viewers, in this extract from the Saturday morning children's show.
• Blue Peter (dur. 8' 02") - Peter Davison, Richard Hurndall and a bevy of monsters join presenters Janet Ellis, Simon Groom and Peter Duncan to celebrate Doctor Who's twentieth anniversary.
• Nationwide (dur. 9' 08") - Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison are interviewed by Sue Lawley, whilst the programme's first producer, Verity Lambert, is interviewed by Richard Kershaw.
• Breakfast Time (dur. 2' 45") - Patrick Troughton and Peter Davison join Frank Bough and Selina Scott in the Breakfast Time studio.

I hope you keep this up, Susan. Don't suppose you fancy doing it in a thread of their own do you?

It will be invaluable for people to refer to if they want to begin collecting the dvd's.

I can keep it going for as long as I can, Mr. Dike *snarf*

What I mean is, I know from past life experiences I cannot always access the internet...but yes, I can start a sub-forum for this (starting tomorrow, and including the 'Five Doctors' entry), and I will add to it on a daily basis, cataloguing the various UK DVD and Blu-ray releases

Episode one of The Deamons tonight, bloody great, sort of a cross between Quatermass & The Pit and The Devil Rides out.
