I really should get the dvds of Bottom - I only ever catch the odd episode on Sky these days and always forget how much I love it. Hilarious and oddly bleak in equal measure, like a Beckett play filled with knob jokes and cartoon-violence

BAD NEWS TOUR
Although Spinal Tap is daddy of mock docs, theres something wonderfully British about the Comic Strips BAD NEWS TOUR Opening shots of London skyline intercut with shots of Bad News performing "Bad News". Skyline shots reach a tower block and zoom in on a lit window. Cut to the kitchen inside this flat. A radio/cassette player is playing the song, loudly. There are various kitchen utensils lying around, and underwear hung up to dry. Vim is in the kitchen, trying to look natural for the cameras. He starts to fry an egg. Den: D'you see the Whistle Test last night? Colin: Sort of, yeah, but I... I was really stoned, you know, and I drank a bottle of brandy, and... yeah, I was with this chick and we were just about to get down to it - huh - I went and put my foot through the television set. Vim: Oh no! Colin: Yeah, so it sort of blew up a bit, you know, and set fire to the curtains, and I missed the second half of the show, so... Den: I bet your mum was really angry! Colin: Well... she wasn't there, was she, Den? Den: Yeah, but, I mean, when she gets back, she's gonna be... Colin: No, Den, Den, she won't be getting back. Den: How come? Colin: 'Cause... 'cause she's dead. Den: Eh? Vim: She's dead, Den. Den: Oh, I get it. Alan's called Vim and your mum's dead. (Colin shakes his head in despair.) Can we cut this bit as well, please? |

Bottom
Bottom factoid. 'S Out Although now generally referred to as episode six of the second series, this episode did not air in the UK for almost three years after it was made. Following production, on 15 July 1992, Rachel Nickell was murdered on Wimbledon Common, the setting for this episode. Accordingly, The BBC decided to withhold domestic transmission for reasons of sensitivity, although it was included in overseas sales packages, and was screened in New Zealand in 1993. The episode was released on video in the UK 1993, and finally was broadcast there on 10 April 1995. |
