Wednesday 9th October - BBC4. A mixture of factual and 'entertainment' programmes are being screened

8pm - 9pm: Inside Porton Down: Britain's Secret Weapons Research Facility - "Dr Michael Mosley investigates Britain's most secretive and controversial military research base, Porton Down, in a programme originally shown on its 100th anniversary in 2016. He learns about chemical and biological weapons old and new, reveals the truth about animal and human testing, and discovers how the latest science and technology are helping to defend the UK against terrorist attacks and rogue nations"

9pm - 10pm: Britain's Nuclear Secrets: Inside Sellafield - "Physicist Jim Al-Khalili explores the history of the nuclear facility near the village of Seascale in Cumbria, investigating Britain's attempts - past, present and future - to harness the power of the atom. He examines the ways waste and spent fuel rods have been stored there over the past 70 years and looks at the latest attempts to try to clean some of it up, from storage in vast open-air ponds to encasing pieces of old reactors in concrete blocks"

10pm - 10.15pm: Mick Jackson Remembers - Threads - "The director and producer looks back on the BBC's apocalyptic drama, Threads, sharing the story behind the creation of this acclaimed vision of Britain suffering the effects of nuclear war. Taking Sheffield as the focal point for the aftermath, the film was highly praised for its examination of the social, economic and environmental damage that such a war would bring"

10.15pm - 12.10am: Threads - "Harrowing drama about the consequences of nuclear war, focusing on two Sheffield families in the days leading up to - and the years following - a direct hit on the city. First shown in 1984, the award-winning film pulls no punches in its depiction of the fallout. Reece Dinsdale and Karen Meagher star"

Threads is a brilliant film which must have been traumatic watching for those who were frequently reminded about mutually assured destruction and the imminence of nuclear war.

If you followed those two with When The Wind Blows you'd be in desperate need of something very uplifting and joyful, perhaps Singin' in the Rain or Paddington
