Any thoughts on Black Sails? Haven't seen a single episode before.

I love it.

I've seen the first two series and have just ordered the third.

It's pirates but Game of Thrones style rather than Johnny Depp style. If you are interested in Caribbean piracy of the time then there are a lot of well known pirates in it. From John Silver to Calico Jack with Flint and Anne Bonny in between,

Be warned though. It's not for the faint of heart and there's frequent strong sex.

Hmm, i'm all grimmed out at the moment. If it's unrelenting, i'll give it a miss. I've liked what i've seen of Gotham so far, so i might plump for that instead.

It's far superior to Grimm. As for unrelenting... just think Game of Thrones but pirates.

Season two is really exciting with ship attacks on towns and so forth. In a way it's slightly lighter in tone than the first season.

Odd you mention Gotham as i also bought the second series at the same time as BS3. I'm getting the first series of Gotham for Christmas so thought i'd get the second series as well in case i desire a Gotham marathon.

Hee, when i say grimmed out, i mean fed up with grimdark stuff rather than the (as you rightly say, average) Grimm series.

Yeah, GoT became a parody of itself somewhere between books 3 and 4 IMO. I'll give BS a miss i reckon.

True story - back when i did a bit of writing for a living and GoT was still only a trilogy of books i got approached and asked if i wanted to do some 'research' work on the Game of Thrones books. Do region guides and the like of places in the books. I declined, but i often wondered since the tv series started a couple of years later whether i turned down something i shouldn't have!

Well let's put it this way.

Had the books still been in print when the series took off you'd have royalty cheques flooding in.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Plus, i only got paid by the word, so no royalties i'm afraid.

Paid by the word... No wonder Martin's books were heavier than an elephant.
