What TV Have You Seen?

I recently watched the second and third series of Happy Valley, a very astutely written and superbly performed show. I thought the last series was very good and finished perfectly.

I then watched the first series of The Deuce, a terrific piece of TV from some of the people behind The Wire. James Franco is brilliant in two of the main roles, playing twins, as well as being an executive producer and occasionally directing. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also extremely impressive in a very brave role and I'm glad I have second season to watch shortly. It is annoying that there is no Blu-ray release of the third season and it doesn't seem like there will ever be one.

Over the last few days, I watched the first two seasons of The Mandalorian again. When I saw it the first time, I was under the impression that, because of the memes, the Child was baby Yoda, not another character of that species, so the timescale didn't make sense.

Watching it from the beginning with the knowledge of who/what the child is and when the series is set means it made sense to me a lot more and I was able to enjoy and appreciate the storytelling much more.

Yeah, Maggie Gyllenhaal is brilliant, turning a character that, in lesser hands, could have been written and played as a one-dimensional 'sex worker with history'. Instead, she is a well-rounded and relatable person, someone with determination and vulnerabilities who often plays different roles with different people.

I've seen Vinyl a couple of times and would happily do so again. The two shows perfectly evoke the setting, particularly The Deuce's amazing recreation of 42nd Street and that whole area of downtown New York which looks exactly as it does in documentary footage I've seen.

The last three were rather different tbh. An episode called Timelash was interesting certainly, but then they usually are cough cough
I still have this 1974 "film" to peruse, and there are two commentaries which I didn't notice harumph, so will peruse them over the weekend. It's been fun , as this is as British as it gets imho. The guest actors were fun, especially Patrick Allen with his understated performance
Do I recommend this series? Yes. It may get a tad repetitive, but the permutations of cast, story content and FX are fascinating to watch unfurl.

I gave up watching The Prisoner (1969) after seven and a half episodes.

Yes, it's original, pretty cool and those suffocating watchdog 'balls' are brilliant and it's also set in the lovely Portmeirion which gives it a defined originality but the stories are so dull and repetitive.

Pretty much every episode has begun with our prisoner #6 (Patrick McGoohan) either drugged, brain washed or mind probed and the fact he's the only actor to appear in more than one episode really doesn't help either. In fact it was quite annoying that #2 changed actor every single episode.

All this coming after a month long binge of all three series of Terry Nation's Survivors (1975-77) during January. Now that was excellent, gripping cult television about what happens to Britain following an apocalyptic plague pandemic across the globe. Ian McCulloch, Denis Lill and John Abineri excel in this. The ninth episode titled Law and Order is a gut wrenching piece of television.

I doubt i could have watched Survivors in the summer of 2020.

There were a number of actor who appeared in numerous episodes:
Angelo Muscat - The Butler
Peter Swanwick - Supervisor
Denis Shaw - The Shop Keeper
Fenella Fielding - The voice of the Telephone Operator

I don't think they did in the episodes i saw.

I admit the butler did but he never or barely spoke. The rest were forgettable characters who had little screen time.

What's with the 'No!' lark. You come across like some stuck up school teacher thrusting your superior knowledge on us. Anyone can cut and paste from the Prisoner Wiki page as you have with the recurring cast.

No matter what it's still repetitive, it's still overrated and it's still shit.
