American Ultra. Jesse Eisenberg is a directionless, neurotic stoner (who's still somehow got Kristen Stewart as a girlfriend) who finds he's not who he thinks he is when assassins start to try to kill him. This mid 2010s action comedy is actually a lot of fun with a good supporting cast in Topher Grace, Connie Britton, Bill Pullman and Buster from Arrested Development. |

Smallville Series 5, Episode 5: Thirst. Smallville goes down the vampiric path with female vampires running Lana's new high school sorority. This is a fun homage to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The blonde haired lead vamp is called Buffy Sanders (Not Summers) and it features some knowing dialogue such as James Masters who played the vampire Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer telling Clark "There are no such thing as vampires, Clark" and Carrie Fisher's Daily Planet editor informing Chloe that "Tall tales about slaying Buffy the vampire do not a reporter make". Probably not one of Smallville's best episodes but fun in that knowing way. |

The Rig. Workers on the Kinloch Bravo oil rig, set to return to the mainland when a mysterious fog rolls in, with communication is cut off panic sets in before something darker emerges. Finally sat down to watch this yesterday, with a good star cast of Iain Glenn, Martin Crompton, Owen Teale headlining this, it had a good start off with element of Stephen King's The Mist and John Carpenter's The Thing feel to it with not knowing who to trust, atmospheric and claustrophobia and the "wonder what is actually out there". Towards the the fourth episode it did tail off to a downward slope then it does pick up a bit with survivors of another rig turning up then gives us another twist. There is bits where it was a bit suspenseful and characters you really want to hate and then redeem themselves.

Smallville Series 5, Episode 6:Exposed (2005) Probably most memorable as the episode where Lois becomes a stripper, but following last episodes Buffy homage this episode is all about them Duke boys as Jonathan Kent's best friend Jack shows up at the farm, as played by Tom Wopat, driving a blue Dodge Charger where the only way to exit it is through the open windows. Tom Wopat was John Schneider's costar in The Dukes of Hazzard that originally aired from 1979 to 1985; in which they played cousins Luke and Bo Duke. The episode contains several references to the show including Lex calling the pair "Good Ol' Boys" which was the name of Waylon Jennings title track on the show. |

Red Eye
Loosely inspired by the Wes Craven film of the same name, this six-part TV miniseries is currently on ITV X and follows Dr Matthew Nolan (Richard Armitage), who is extradited from London to Beijing for a crime he says he didn't commit. Escorting him on the plane is English police officer DC Hana Li (Jing Lusi), who is initially convinced that Nolan is guilty. However, on board flight 357, a number of suspicious deaths lead her to believe that Nolan's arrest and extradition isn't entirely accidental. I've seen the first three episodes and thought this was going to be a longer version of the events in the 2005 film. Fortunately, events switch between the plane to London and backwards and forwards in time, expanding on the idea of a conspiracy in a series that is well acted and tense. Recommended.

About a week ago, we finished viewing the Fallout tv series. I did like it, especially for the badass ghoul. The only reason I'm posting about it, is just to mention how (almost) speechless I was, when my wife said it was better than the Last of Us season one. I can only chalk this up to my wife being a big Fallout video game fan. Because whilst I was entertained by Fallout in tv series form, imo, it really isn't fit to lick the boots of Last of Us (which was the greatest game adaption to date and also one of the greatest television shows ever made!). WTF.

Having never seen nor played the video game, this was completely new to me but, like Last of Us, I thought it was extremely well acted, had a brilliant soundtrack, and was appropriately humorous at times. The last thing I watched was the first season of Veep, a TV show I haven't seen for a long time, and remembered exactly why I bought the first three seasons - it's very cleverly written, wonderfully performed, and smartly directed - and will rewatch it with the commentaries.
