The exhausting eight episode Assignment #2 for Sapphire and Steel was quite superb.

Dealing with ghosts from the First World War infiltrating the present at an old railway station. Again the use of old rhymes is strong but this isn't children's television. Parts of this are quite unsettling such as Steel out cold, tangled in barb wire and Sapphire, eyes jet black possessed by the darkness shrouding them. The line of passengers, all dead of course, waiting for a train that will never arrive, which gets longer with each passing episode, is really quite eerie.

Eight episodes is stretching it a bit but some parts absolutely fly by. Dark and decidedly grim, yet quintessentially British, i'm sure some members here (B_E, Inspector Ron, Nos and MTDS to name but four) would adore this series.

It's the one that people still remember though. David Cann turning up in Jam years later probably means this left a big impression on Chris Morris as well. ahem. Six is still my favourite, but this is a close second.......

I've watched the first few episodes of The Owl Service, for those who don't know an adaptation of a children's book for Granada TV in 1969, on dvd by Network.
It amazes me the quality of these shows which were intended for children back then but are far too grown up for kids of today. Even 2 episodes in I can tell I'm going to love this and I'm looking forward to watching a load of them tomorrow, it's just a shame there are only 8 episodes.

I watched the whole fifth Assignment of Sapphire and Steel last night.

Utterly brilliant and compelling viewing. Weird and wonderful and a riff on the Ten Little Indians story.

If anyone wants a recommendation for something to get from the Network sale then Sapphire and Steel would be it... and The Night Has Eyes obviously.

Default Man down

Recently been re-watching Greg Davies sitcom Man Down, just absolutely brilliant, haven't laughed so much since gran fell in the septic tank, and it was nice to see Rik Mayal doing what he does best, sheer lunacy.

BRIAN: The last time you said that you asked me which one of The Muppets my wife's vagina most looked like!

DAN: I know... and you said Gonzo... all purple... all messy thick tufts.

Yeah i can see The Wire is a quality show. Though some of the writing seems a little hit and miss. Some really good dialogue interspersed with endless somewhat unnecessary use of the term mother****er.
